Discussion: Zadie Smith

Amazing style, so real and creative using the elements of an multicultural centre such as London........Similar style could be great to describe the cultural diversity in Melbourne's (Australia) society

Such an amazing book... I fell in love with it 2 pages in. Though I've never been to Australia, I suppose Canada would be considered a good comparison in multi-culturalism as well. Unlike the states, we don't subscribe to the idea of a "melting pot" society (although before reading this book I would have thought England did). Each character has a unique background, yet it is easy to pick out the "Britishness" in each of them. The Iqbal's struggle to assimilate and yet keep their son's true to their heritage really opened my eyes to some of the struggles immigrants face (aside from the obvious culture shock).
