Did anybody notice in "Catcher in the Rye" that Salinger gives mention to Maugham? If you go and read "the Moon and Sixpence" by Maugham, it's kind of interesting and really raises a question as to what Holden Caulfield's whole deal was. Maugham's story is about Paul Gauguin essentially--an artist who really took a long time to find his true 'home'. So the poor screwed-up Holden is possibly seeking his place in the world? I remember when I was in eleventh grade, we were all forced to write an essay on why we think that H. C. was a molested child and that's why he's such a mess. I wrote simply that I couldnt' write the essay because I disagreed with that theory. Reading Maugham years later only solidified that...any ideas?

Actually in "Catcher in the Rye" Salinger refers to "Of Human Bondage" not "The Moon and the Sixpence". And even though both books are quite similar with the whole "running off to Paris to be a painter" bit there are signifigant differences.
Of Humand Bondage is considered an almost biographically work of Maughams. Philip the main character is born with a club foot and his deformity is often compared with Maugham's speech impediment (a studder I believe), but Philip prays night after night for his foot, but the miracle never manifests. He then decides to abandon his faith and his schoolinh to be a clergy member. I believe this is a parallel with Holden, I feel that Holden prayed night after night for his brother's cancer to go away, and when his brother passed away he also lost faith. He lost faith in god, and mankind (every one was "fake" or "phony")
Then Holden goes on to say Maugham isn't someone he'd want to call up. I think that is Holden's way of not wanting to face his dissapointment all over again. I don't think he was "molested" in the sense people think of, but rather in a sense of his childhood being raped by the death of his brother which altered his mentality as a young adult.
This should be in a different forum... Anyhow that's how I was introduced to Maugham, Salinger's reference to him...

During last Septembers Hurrican Isabel event, I was without power for about a week. It was during that time that I picked up "Of Human Bondage." Wow, what a disapointment! I was waiting and waiting for the "good stuff" to happen. Actually, it was one of the best books I have ever read. Then, I picked up a copy of Maughams "Complete Shortstories", and found all of them to be practically the same...but when I like someone, I like them to death, so I have nothing to say except that I have never read an author that told the same story over and over in so many different ways; and, to my liking.

Somerset Maugham sought inspiration on several visits to Singapore. His short stories of Singaporean colonial life include The Outstation, Yellow Streak, The Casuarina Tree (1926), and the controversial The Letter (1927), the real-life murder of her lover by a rubber planter’s wife.
Does someone out there know of any other Maugham short stories or novels, which are set in Singapore? Much appreciated. S.
Also would like a list of Maugham short stories and novels set in French Polynesia.... tuvm... S.
