Well... Actually, Vernor Vinge is a major proponent of the technological singularity. What he's saying is things could be much better, but they could also be much much worse than humans can possibly imagine.
Vinge is a master science fiction writer, he has won the Hugo twice. And has won the Nebula for best short story 3 times.
