A writer who seems to have found a new reason for writing stories, and has given me a new reason to read them.

He did an excellent interview for Esquire in, I think, 1999. You'd find it if you look.

I found a good article at
http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/vol18/issue29/books.inperson.html.

I am doing a presentation on his short story "I want to live"

Does anyone have any info on him regarding this particular story?

i know people who knew thom when he was younger and when he was boxing. before he became a janitor he was an exotic dancer. a lot of people don't know that about him.

So does all of this mean he was never a doctor? Never in Africa? In his acknowledgements he mentions getting great info and stories from relatives so perhaps that was at least the genesis of this. ThereĀ“re also a disproportionate number of diabetics in his stories. Any word on when a new collection might be forthcoming? Perhaps a novel?

An exotic dancer!?!? No way really?
I`m a former marine, a boxer and now a medical student so you can imagine how happy I was when a friend sent me "The Pugilist..." I even had a go at writing some shortt stories which made me realize just how talented Jones is. Lovers of Thom Jones might want to check out `Jarhead- a Marines Chronicle of the Gulf War` by Anthony Swofford. Swofford also attented the Iowa writers workshop and has a similar style to his prose. I loved his no BS account of what life on operations is really like.

Any one wanna chat let me know.

Like most readers I was introduced to Thom Jones thru The Pugilist....Since then I've read almost everything he's written, Is he working on a novel that will soon be published?
