I started reading the paperback edition of Lord Foul's Bane in the late fall of 1979. By the time I was halfway through it I ordered the entire trilogy in hardback.

It remains one of the highlights of my fantasy reading life. The only thing I've encountered since that comes anywhere close to the grace of its intricate plotting is the entire 5-year arc of the Babylon 5 television series. The quiet revelation in the last chapter of The Power That Preserves that resonates back to the first chapter of Lord Foul still makes me gawp in awe. And the richness of the final scene between Covenant and Foamfollower continues to make me cry and laugh at the same time. I finished the trilogy in the wee hours of the morning, and immediately re-read the last two chapters before turning out the light.

All six books are something very, very special.

I originally picked these books up in 1979 for some vacation reading. All of the Chronicles are by far the BEST books I have read.....over 20 years later I have read, re-read and purchased new because they were worn out. No other author has been able to paint such vivid picture in my mind....so much so these books have become a part of my life. In the last 20 years I have read this series at least once per year......My favorite remains the Illearth War and Lord Mhoram. The only wish that I would wish is that Mr. Donaldson pen a prequel to the series.....that would make a great series unforgettable.
