Great Author. Had a style which was easy to read and factual. It was always like you where listening to him tell a story with the facts and little known tidbits interspersed. I and millions of other will miss him. I think he showed great courage and an overwhelming sense of his mortality when he found he has Cancer

I am doing a crossword puzzle dated Jan 5th, 2003 from the Las Vegas Review Journal. The major theme for this puzzle comes from a quote that Mr. Ambrose made in one of his books. I have not had a chance to read any of his works. Maybe someone could help familiarize me with some of his more famous quotes.

I met Mr. Ambrose in Chicago a few years back. I was going to the Harold Washington Library to hear him talk about "Nothing like it in the world". I mistakenly went in the wrong entrance and there sittin alone on a bench reading a book was Stephen Ambrose. It was about an hour before he was scheduled to talk and he and his wife Moira spent that time talking woth me as a Father would talk to his son. He was a kind, honorable man with a pleasant gruffness that made you feel at ease. He then autographed a copy of Citizen Soldier for me and went on to his talk. It was a solemn day when this man passed and he will be sorely missed. What made him so special was that he wasn't special. He was a regular guy just like the rest of us and his job was writing, and he was great at his job.

I discovered Ambrose through Band of Brothers and have been in love with his work ever since. I wish I was born years earlier so I could have had the chance to meet him, and perhaps have been taught by him. He has giving me such insight into the matters of the world that have influenced me in my college and career decisions I am making now at the age of 17. I will truly miss him.

I have read six of Stephen Ambrose books, and was not sure whether he was still writing. I see from the above letters that he died recently. Could someone tell me when he died and what his last book was.
