I first became interested in his work when my children were little. The 'Frances' books were top favourites at bedtime, though my personal favourite was definitely 'Best Friends for Frances', probably because my middle name is Harold! However, the book which most impressed as an adult (!) was definitely 'Riddley Walker'. I was spellbound, especially as I know the part of Kent where it's set pretty well. These days, I do a lot of writing, though nothing like 'Riddley Walker'. I'd like to hear from other Hoban 'fans'.

Riddley Walker rocks. That's all I know.

Russel Hoban weaves and twists the most eveyday things into utterly new mythologies with a golden thread of twisted magic running through them... First book i read was Kleinzeit, and i was hooked. He is wonderful: 84 years old and still furiously publishing; each new book a further distillation of his gentle and beautifully skewed alternate London.

Riddley Walker re-configured my synapses. Really. Another one of those writers who should be considered for a Nobel prize, but won't. Just like the late, great, Stanislaw Lem.
