I think Ross McDonald was just as talented as Hammet or Chandler, very prolific. He wasn't the innovator that the previous two were, he arrived later, but he expanded on their styles and ideas. I find his books more psychological and woven than Hammet or Chandler, but I don't know that he captured the essence of noir, probably because he was from a different era. Just my opinion....
