A Fine Balance is a GREAT book! I finished it an hour ago and it will stay with me for a long time. He's a wonderful writer and the characters were so believable and real.
The people asking for themes, women, etc.......READ THE BOOKS! Don't let other people do your research for you!

I must lead a book club (about 30 women) discussion about A Fine Balance and am looking for help. I loved the book and found it encouraging and uplifting while certainly tragic and sad, but am getting lots of "hated it - it was so depressing!" comments from club members. I've asked that they come to the meeting with more specific reasons for not liking the book and I do feel that we'll have a good discussion with strong feelings on both sides. But, I want to #1. understand why people are depressed by it (intelligent people, too, and I just "don't get it") and #2. find specific ways to encourage them to think differently while respecting their opinions. Any ideas?
