i've been reading cormier for six years now (i'm constantly re-reading what books i have and scouraging ye olde book stores and the net for his out-of-print titles) and i find him to be one of america's finest authors, as well as the best young adult fiction writer.

it started with the chocolate war; required reading for my first year in high school. i fell in love with his style and enjoyed and revered the fact that he didn't hold back. unfortunately, the chocolate war is the only novel that i had to read for school - all of his other books that i have read were read on my own. i thought it was a shame because looking back, high school was the perfect time for me to read his books and i'm sure many other kids in high school would benefit from it, too.

i'm 21 now, and was wondering if cormier has found his way into more high school classrooms. i'm sure the chocolate war has: that is THE book to read. but i was wondering about other titles, such as: the bumblebee flies anyway, i am the cheese, tenderness, in the middle of the night, fade, we all fall down, and after the first death. i've seen that some of you are reading some of these titles for class and i'm greatly pleased. but is cormier a familiar name when it comes to high school literature? and do you read or refer to more than one of his works in class?

i hope you all enjoy his work and continue reading.

Patty Campbell recently published an excellent book on Robert Cormier. It includes a biography of him and analyses of all of his books. Her chapter on I am the Cheese in particular is excellent; it answers many of the questions that mystify people about that novel. The book is called "Robert Cormier: Daring to Disturb the Universe" and you can buy it on Amazon.
