To answer Mandy's question, yes, Phillip Roth did write "The Conversion of the Jews". It can be found along with 5 other short stories in Roth's book "Goodbye Columbus".

I think Phillip Roth is a brilliant writer although I did find Sabbath's Theatre hard to get into but having just read The Human Stain I will have another go -because I found that difficult to start with as well.
My favourite book is "I Married a Communist". As a child in the fifties I was brought up in a communist family in London and how different it was - we went to see the Red Army Choir which was feted in London and it was okay to be a commie.
I wanted to send a message to Phillip Roth to say how much I enjoyed his work but I am new to the computer and cannot find his websight. If anyone else has contact with him I would be glad if they could pass on my compliments.

Roth has a clarity of vision and cogency in his prose I feel is unmatched by any other contemporary writer. American Pastoral is remarkable.

I like him a lot in general, but in Letting Go, I found him hysteric, specially when dealing with Libby. And I was depressed while reading it, it's hopeless all around. I don't remember other books of his this depressing.
