He deserves to be better known, doesn't he?

He's very highly regarded in academia, but never caught on with the public, probably because he's too misanthropic and negative. I think he's the quintessential late-20th century English poet, have his "Collected Poems", which I read each spring, and with "This Be the Verse" being my all-time favorite.

Misanthropic? Apparently there were two women in his life & he retained both by playing one off against the other. Scheming as well as misanthropic perhaps!

Perhaps his poetry will be explored by some who encounter him through viewing the recent film, "The History Boys". The boys quote his poem "MCMXIV" regarding the loss of innocence following WWI. I know I certainly enjoy this and other of his poems.

An Arundel Tomb, Aubade, The Building... so many great poems he left us. Negative, maybe. Lucid, no doubt. What does it matter what the man did in his life, how many women, friends & enemies, cats & dogs. Just read him.
