Did he make exact, word for word copies of someone's work? Or did he rework an endless, recurring theme? The odds of arranging an entire paragraph of meaningful poetic prose twice, independently, by different writers, is astronomical-hence the meaningfulness of the plagiarism rules. But the odds of touching on a theme that resonates with most humans, although similar in content, but unique in word usage, is absolutely normal and even expected. Herman Hesse is an author that comes to mind when I read The Alchemist. The parallels between Coehlo's book and Sidhartha, for example, run deep. Is this theivery, or merely a convergence of insight?
