hello,
i respect neruda's poetry. not because he touches my inner core, but for the reason that he unravels some hidden aspects of human pasthos.

Just recently a new book about Neruda came out, it's called "Tango del Viudo", read it if you can, it deals with Neruda's stormy relationship with Jossie Bliss

Twenty Love poems is one of his best collections and the captain's verses, my sister saw il postino and started talking about this 'amazing' poet. I had his poems for a loooong time. For a rocker, i can be pretty soft. I think its the way his love poems appeal to me that makes me love them. If only someone recited his poems to me, id be theirs!
I like people to be frank in their poetry and when beauty can be found in everything. It makes me feel better

I love the way he writes sexy poems without being sentimental or mawkish.

If you like Neruda you might like to check out Fleur Adcock - start with her poem: "ex-queen among the astronomers" - great stuff.

Neruda like García Márquez, one in poetry and the other in prose, hace some "fraseos" that are almost hypnotic at first contact with for a "virginal" reader . That would explain their tremendous success with their contemporaries, given that it was new not only for the novel realder but it was innovative for the whole of Spanish Literature. This hypnotic character of certain phrases works only on the Spanish matrix. Whether this "hook" was a fortunate happenstance or a purposeful stroke of genius, it really doesn't matter since there is a whole lot of meat to their work, but it doesn't seem as dazzling as it did in their time. This is my personal opinion and experience. It doesn't strike me as it did before. Nonetheless Veinte Poemas de Amor y Una Canción Desesperada it still does resound with an "endless feeling"...
