I see a poof coming on here..... and before it does, let me just say that although I can see a glimpse of your point Captain, it's getting drowned in your trailer-trash Ricki Lake style of putting forward your opinions....
>>By ortlieb
I feel it too Ortie.. But you know yours will go with it, right? And mine. So Captain - a quick one before it's too late: You were there, I was not. Fact. You know what it's like, I do not. Fact. You know what we think. Speculation. You say we're the problem. Subjective. You can swear. Stupid.
But thanx for being where you were anyway. You obviously paid a big price.
>>By Lynn
There's no doubt in what you say, Captain, and as I've written up there for Trident, goes for you too!
I don't think many here tend to glorify war or are panting to have someone to have a gun pointed at you to have the chill up your back. True, I've never seen a REAL war and I'm here sitting nicely in the warmth thinking in a certain way how a conflict is with un-experienced point of view, and to be honest if there's a brawl in the streets or in a bar I'll be the first to run away (or be bitten black & blue if in the middle!). But this doesn't mean that everyone here glorifies war. Internet, in it's good & bad aspects, is not like TV: I know VERY WELL that seeing pictures isn't the same thing as looking at the real stuff since the other senses are blocked (to smell the rot air, to touch the untouchable, to taste the unimmaginable!), and I've surfed in some websites that not many would like to view because they show reality AS IT IS! And it's disgusting. I think of how those enemy soldiers in "Bravo Two Zero" were shot or badly wounded from grenades, having their skin burnt and peeled off, or without hands, crying for pain, perhaps seeing one of their legs in pieces nearby, or having one smelly burnt foot close their nose after an explosion. Seeing those pics in "those" websites gave a more detailed idea of how Life (or violence, not only War!) can be, and there's nothing to glorifiy: suffering is suffering, in every latitude, longitude, continent you are, whatever living being is involved... whoever! To be frank, it's deep sh!t. The Captain, I'll never EVER manage to imagine a crumb what you've seen, done (had to do!), felt, during your period. I totally agree with your point of view even if this surely doesn't mean anything to you (and it's absolutely comprehensible from my part: who am I to say "I agree", comparing my life with your past?), but I would like to pinpoint out that not everyone here is appearently glorifying War, or Terror if you prefer. True, we talk about Mr Andy and highlight Him for his books and actions, but, and I repeat, BUT, I don't know if we would still consider Him like now IF we would have seen him in action, 'cause even if he has described scenes of hand-to-hand-desperate fightings, seeing it or beeing nearby is NOT at all the same thing, and it's scary, it's fuc*ing scary! Seeing a knife circuling in the air to then slash a body, hearing the yellings of both hunter & hunted is not easily descrivable, and this is an imagery that remains inside for a long time.
The Captain, there's only one aspect of all this that I can say, "I totally understand you" is to want to say out your feelings, even the way you've put it. It's suffocating, morally and then physically, to always digest what others think, KNOWING that most of it is bullsh*t. I'm not referring at all to this forum guys, it's in another (an italian one!) where crap piles on crap untill I just let them talk whatever they want; at the end, let them believe it, it's their business, I've had enough of squabbling on saying my opinion, I'm not there to waste time and energy. Like what Mr Andy said: "After tryng plan A, plan B, and then plan C, you've to accept the fact to find yourself in deep sh*t!". Well, perhaps not exactly in this case, but it's to give the idea.
If the others don't mind, I think The Captains presence will have it's own relevence here, and honestly I'd like to hear more of your opinion of... whatever you feel like saying (I'm not trying to be wishy-washy or whatsoever, but I really am interested!).
P.S.: believe it or not, I didn't surf "those" sites because of war-book reasons, some years ago I was in a pretty depressed state and thought could find some answers to those usual capital "W" questions (Who are we? Why are we here?... WTF for everything!?), and surfing a bit here & there I was quite casualy in the middle of this type of site. After seeing the seventh pic of REAL dead persons, HORRIBLY killed, I couldn't take it and burst into tears, almost due to throw out. It was my first visible contact with dead persons, and this didn't solve at all my "W" questions (it elongated the list actually!), but it's been after that period that I've seen Life in a different way, and started to respect, in a personal way, Death too.

>>By ortlieb (Wednesday, 10 Dec 2003 13:40) I suspect Rex got inspired from watching the episode of Blackadder Goes Forth [...]
Nope, wrong theory. :) Dunno what's this Blackadder all about... <waiting for Google to show results> No, really have no idea of what's this TV series.
Ok, see yous or during lunch-break (hmmm, doubt it, perhaps won't do any break today!) or tonight! *yawns* :(
>>By Deusrexmachina
Deux, if you go to page 87-88 you can find out what David the Captain has to say. He then said: “Sorry if i came on a bit strong, …. And if i sounded rude, i apologize”. As this applies to his former post too – I saved him the trouble this time.

Captain?
Hey guys what did I miss? See, that's what comes of tinkering with live chat java scripts, whilst chatting with ortlieb (maybe?) ha. ha...
Lynn: Any doubters about who is who on the live chat - No problem - You press button at bottom of chat window and go register your nick...
I haven't set it up for a moderator, or for any one person to be in overall control !!! If you arrange times to meet, you needn't tell me if you don't want to...I have no problem with that.
Please bear in mind I forfeited my author profile page to provide all of you with this chat page....It is now on Auto Andyway, so you only need to sign in with your nicks.

Re poof'd book blurbs over at CR board.
Since when MG have book blurbs been considered as anything other than a marketing tool. Amazon.com, nor any other bokstore holds copyright on book blurbs...
Would I scream (haven't) "Hey that's my copyright bok blurb" if another web site posts it? Not B likely. I'd be over the moon...
>>By buddy
Thanx for forfeiting your page for the chatroom, buddy... I just visited and did a " * bikergirl slaps everyone in the room." Made me LOL... I'll shut up now.
>>By bikergirl
Captain? I am also confused. One question - what was in the notebooks? And what's a poof - where I come from it's something quite specific.
Good of you Buddy to set up the chat page - I popped in yesterday and confused a lot of Russian people who obviously thouight I was mental. Didn't seem to be anything about AM going on.
cheers.
Might slap BG back if I get the chance.
>>By Nomad
Nice one buddy, pity my computer won't load it, guess it'll be a home job then. bg how wusy (okay so I can't spell) are you? Slapping. it should have been a well-placed SAS style body blow. Stop being girly!
Nomad poof'ing is when they delete a message. Guessing it happened with captain because the rest made no sense.
>>By Bethan
Hi, Nomad... If a post is in violation of Discussion Guidelines, it goes "Poof"-- as in "All Gone!" -- removed with a wave of MG's magical gardening wand! :o)
Hi again, Buddy... I feel bad, but grateful, about you relinquishing your author's profile in order to set up this chatroom. Went looking again last night to see if there is a way to save chats, but the site very clearly says "no" due to restrictions of Java scripting. Instructions did say, however, that chats could be saved using IRC or miRC, which I had been trying out (courtesy of Ortlieb). I'm way to un-techie to know if this means "in conjunction with" or "instead of" so I'll test a little more. Chats can get very confusing and go so quickly sometimes that being able to save them is a significant advantage/feature. Plus, maybe we can get you back your author's profile. Thanks again, Buddy! Very nice of you!
>>By am-i-binned
Forgot to say trident you can't leave it there. Remember, I've started so I'll finish!
>>By Bethan
Hey guys, it's no sweat if you wanna register for $20 over at Mirc/Irc after your first 30 days are up...
Personally, I'd rather put the money straight in a charity box - know the charitable % is going to cause of choice.
Am-I-Binned, shame on you for wanting to copy the chat!!! That's tantamount to taking along a secet recording device to party with later, after the event... What ever happened to just having a jolly time, spur of the moment fun?...
Cor blimey, talk about killjoy factor of "watch what you say, someone's taping the conversation!!!!!" One thing for sure, there's No chance of that with the Andyway chat...
>>By buddy
Sorry folks, I've had experience of bugged lines, and don't much like the idea of taping/saving of live chat for future ref...
The big question WHY record events of message boards/live chats? I mean, it's not as if a celeb is going to drop in and say Hi.
Lurk, watch, and post incognito, is more likely: as happened here...
>>By buddy
For the first time in a while I actually agree with buddy! (Okay don't faint girl ha ha) I say too many dumb things without being reminded of them....
>>By Bethan
Aaaah well, sadly I see I'm back to apologizing, Buddy... once again it seems I've run afoul of you. How do you always manage to find intentions within my words that are not my intentions at all?
My desire to save chats is because they go so quickly and can get very confusing at times, for the exact reason that they are spur-of-the-moment fun. With many people speaking in a compressed forum, I find I miss things or lose track of what is being said to whom. That is the sole reason for my desiring transcripts. I have no ulterior motives and, projecting my own attitude, I would have absolutely no qualms, no killjoy hesitations, about others recording anything I say. In fact, I've often shared after-laughs with folks who’ve saved chats they've had with me for themselves.
Whatever I say, wherever I am, that is what I mean, that it is who I am... so for me, I see no difference in whether my words are remembered in bytes or in brain cells.
In this world of silently typed words, saving chats seems to be the equivalent of capturing Kodak memories -- a way to remember and enjoy again the sharing of good fun with good friends…
>>By am-i-binned
Ha, ha, Kodak memories!!!
If I see a camera I duck or head for a suitable pillar/tree to hide behind...
When at parties/functions there's a point where you can carry on a conversation with one group whilst listening in to another, but an element of missing out makes for the time-honoured entrance mid laugh: "Oh, did I miss something?" and everyone proceeds to enlighten!!! I like that aspect, and a little mystery and element of the unknown adds to the overall party atmosphere of tease...
>>By buddy
Yo! Tom Pun!!! Where the heck are you?!?
And now for a different kind of Kodak moment... :o)

>>By am-i-binned
Yes Tom Pun, HOW DO I GET A COPY OF INK NUMBER ?!?!?!
If I ask politely ???? please please please please please please...etc
Bethan: To go back to Captain and the poofed post: Captain is very concerned that we are worshipping war. He's had (I was gonna say bad experiences with war, but I guess experiences with war are per definition bad) war experiences and he wanted to let us know that war and violent deaths have to be threated with the upmost consideration. So talking about McNab and B20 and other SAS related stuff should not be threated lightly. He just used a different kind of language - but I think the above is about what he meant to say.
>>By Lynn
"Struth" http://www.infinityfusion.com/ink - Wherefore art thou?
That's the slowest web site I've encountered in years...Maybe a lot of juggling is going on backstage - the html & java script code is all over the place like a paper chase. (right click, view source, Wordwrap, you'll see what I mean) . Compare it to MG's neat topiary...
Has anyone managed to navigate the whole site? It was real zippy last time up...
>>By buddy
Might just be a fluke right now, Buddy... I had no probs earlier with it...
Ooooh, wait! I know! Must be all the pushing and shoving of everyone cramming in together to eyeball the eye candy! AM and VM! Oooh, the stuff dreams are made of! LOL! ;oD

>>By buddy (Friday, 12 Dec 2003 15:59) If I see a camera I duck or head for a suitable pillar/tree to hide behind...
You imitating me? :D
Well, so much for blabbering my ideas up there for The Captain; oh well.
I don't understand: cannot do a 'normal' chat in YAHOO or MSN (this permits multiple chatters in the same window!)?
>>By Deusrexmachina
Hey Deus, tell you what, let's get this straight, right now, and no collisions later. You sprint left I go right: and don't let no one else share your hidey hole. It's hard for two people in the same place to play dead if need be...
Re Andyway chat. If you go in direct through the bookstore and don't try to do it via other chat portals i.e, Mirc, you won't experience multiple chats nor lag...I'll let you into a secret, I haven't set the alarm system, and that way I don't receive notification (alarm bell ringing on my puter to inform me of intruders)....You (any of you) go there and can chat without my knowledge. I can't think of a fairer system than that...The chat room is not registered as an open site, so unless the url is collected from this board how can anyone else outside of AM/CR boards know where it is located and who but people interested in either would want to participate?
I know the latter will likely draw a response of "Yes, but there's always someone who wants to say things about McNab & Ryan we don't like..."
Tough!...That's life...Live with it, ignore it if you can't handle it....
If you experience any really unwelcome guests let me know at devonwren@yahoo.com and I can ban them...Decision to ban would have to be a majority vote, because I seriously believe in freedom of speech...
Right, with that said, if you don't like my terms for chatting at Andyway, I feel sure you'll soon have an alternative portal...It would seem resistance within the ranks of F-Troop already exists...Sorry, folks, with Andyway you get no senior officers, you play on equal footing....
>>By buddy
There's a major flaw with Yahoo/MSN chat - anyone logged into either portal (with a little chat savvy or naivete) can watch the action on any one of the chat boards. With a little techno savvy they can watch private, too!!!
If you don't want the Andyway portal, say so, and no hard feelings from this end. Mind you, seeing as Am-I-Binned suggested (florked) live chat wasn't/isn't that relevant, maybe it's not without a Hofficer in control of the ban/delete/poof button...Sorry, but I also believe honesty to be a mark of integrity and trust...
Re INK magazine: Has anyone picked up an issue, yet?
>>By buddy
Hmmm... this chatroom thing seems to be taking on a life of its own... sorry, folks... :o\
Buddy, I'm not very comfortable with the way you've taken my florked comment out of its context. Since you apparently don't mind sharing what I said offboard, may I post my flork to you in its entirety? I don't have any problems with what I said, but since it was said to you in private, I am asking your permission.
>>By am-i-binned
AIB: Absolutely no problem with you posting your Flork message to buddy, (subject chat) likewise post my reply. That way there is no half measure story line...
The problem with taking a point of opinion offboard (private) when the overall subject is for or about everyone onboard, is the downside of people getting the wrong slant (idea) about others.
I think of private (flork) purely for private 1-1 interaction which has no bearing on or about others, ie; not for airing opinion/grievance/whatever like snotty nosed kids behind the bike shed ganging up to pick on their next victim, usually someone who is either a tad outspoken or unwilling to be manipulated/brainwashed in to gang mentality. Team spirit when voluntary is one thing, the other...well, work it out for yourselves...
I've always said I'm a straight talker, no bullshit, and if you want it straight, it seems to me that you want to be in charge (at all times AIB) pushing, cajoling, florking/courting newbies to glean as much as you can (be in my gang or else) and when ever anyone dares to disagree with you, or comes here and voices anything that you find hard to swallow, you lead the attack, believe me, it shows, and when you think you're losing ground you change tack or pull the weepy angle.
Message boards can be tough zones, you take the rough with the smooth, you mix not pick out the weak or strong to ally with, you go with the flow, be one of the boys or girls. MG's topiary is not too bad, and if I get clipped tighter than I'd wish, so be it, but I don't crawl to MG, don't pretend to be any thing other than honest in what I post.
To be absolutely honest, some of those (military guys) who have dropped in and dropped out (due to gang mentality on board), despite antagonistic posts or controversial bickering, Personally, they were some of the most interesting people with something worthwhile to say, only they never really got the chance, and if you step back and ask yourself why am I unable to let other people (people I don't approve of) express themselves with open hearts, you might rethink your strategy...
Not everyone sees sun's rays shining out of AM's arse, but that doesn't mean they don't admire him, that they don't like his writing, but if they don't like the man what is wrong in their saying so, and maybe with the right approach one might deduce why they don't like him...Of those who admire/desire everything about him are, unfortunately, seeing him through rose tinted specs. He ain't Nick Stone, Nick Stone is his creation, immortal, and who knows, maybe Nick Stone is a means unto ***** ******* discovering who Andy McNab is, really is, not the image portrayed as AM...If ever there was a confused person it's him, understandably so...
That's something to mull over, right. Take that backstage and rant and rage. I don't have to listen...
>>By buddy
BTW: So tht everyone knows!!! I don't save for posterity any flork messages received or sent - all are deleted...I don't copy for posterity any of the pages here on the boards, so if I miss a poof'd (deleted) post, I'm in the dark...Contact AIB, and you can get any and every goddamn word typed here and previously at www.Allreaders.com.
To me, that kind of hoarding of info has an unhealthy obsessional slant.
OK, I've said my piece, you can all jump on me, kick hell out of me, if you feel inclined. Then again, maybe MG will be unable to resist clipping my wings...
>>By buddy
Sorry, All...
With permission, this was my florked comment to Buddy:
Thank you so much for doing this, [Buddy]... so very kind! :o) I don't quite understand what the FAQ's meant about miRC, but I'm really hoping I can figure out a way to use "in conjunction" because I definitely like the user-friendliness of the chatroom you set up for us. I don't quite understand, though, the implications of you relinquishing your author's profile so that concerns me. I wouldn't want anything like this to have a negative effect on your books -- real-time online chatting is not that important. Fun, yes! but not important...
>>By am-i-binned
You certainly have interesting things to say Buddy, but this time I disagree. The image of AIB you paint here may be your opinion, and you have every right to have your opinion, but I don't agree. If AIB wants this to be a pleasant place to be - you might call that wanting to be in charge. I just call it 'doing her very best to make this a pleasant place to be'. There might have been really interesting military people who dropped by - but they don't just want to give us their view - they want us to agree. If we don't, they leave. Over and over again we've been saying that we don't think of AM as Mr. Holy himself. Of course he has his mistakes, maybe even more than average, who knows. But we like to talk and think about the good parts. And if people come here to talk about his bad sides - they are finished real quick because they don't get much response (to their liking). Then this is obviously not really their place. So what. Go elsewhere. I would go elsewhere if I don't like it here anymore. As for knowing AM: No, of course he ain't Nick Stone. That doesn't mean we can't like the character Stone. And wonder what and how it is AM. Some may know him personally and know the truth. Those who don't know him are free to speculate. It's just fun.
