To Sofia: I've read most of what Marguerite Duras wrote. I was fascinated by the spare, reoccuring images, which are used to evoke such emotional weight. I believe the author wants the reader to feel the scene rather than just merely see it, which is why the images are repeated. I find her careful use of language is profound. It still makes my voice tremble when I read the line "I have a face laid waste" out loud, (from "The Lover.") I have not read "The Four Novels, etc:" but I intend to.

im looking for any thoughts or comments in relation to the internal confrontation between social order and nature in moderato cantabile

I thought the book was absolutely terrible. It was translated terribly and is very choppy. It is very repetitive and there is no flow. The plotline is not bad, but it was written in a way so as not to show her true talents.

To Drew: Have you read the original french version? Since I don't speak french, I can't tell how the translation altered the original writing. Is it the nature of the book you dislike or the translation itself? I do know her writing is intentionally spare and repetetive in order to make the reader truly feel what is taking place. Have you read other books by Ms. Duras?
