Discussion: Magnus Mills

great writer.

Magnus Mills's books are incredibly funny, but I'm not sure why. Funniest thing I ever read was the sequence in All Quiet on the Orient Express in which the narrator tries to order groceries over the phone.

His deadpan humour and realistic working-class characters are a refreshing change from the outpourings of middle-class British satirists. Having said that, his new novel "Exporers of the New Century" is, as the title suggests, a new departure for Mr Mills, who is rumoured to have gone back to driving a bus, greatly disillusioned with his life as a full-time writer.

I think 'Explorers of the New Century' was perhaps the descedant of 'Three to see the King', another departure in his quite bried ouevre..elements of fable and an unrealisitc setting whch is nevertheless described realisitically.

Mills is also a fine exponent of the short story.

If you haven't yet read him, you could wait for the film version of 'The Restraint of Beasts', which is on its way. Graham Linehan, a TV comedy writer almost unequalled in recent years, has written the screenplay....that seems very appropriate to me. Graham and Magnus are two of my top writers.:)

Yes, The Restraint of Beasts got me laughing out loud a few times, which very few books do for me. Thanks Pip :)

I'd be interested to know if anyone has read or heard of 'An Early Bath for Thompson'.
