i think kevin smith can be argued as an auteur

The guy directs, edits, writes and stars in films set in his home town, and in the case of Clerks, in his own place of work depicting stories close to his heart involving themes he obsesses over such as sex, comics and three-nippled gypsies using actors that he is close friends with, including his own sister (the animal masturbater in Clerks...) and a production crew that almost never changes. If that doesn't make him an auteur, then, shit, I don't know what does!
