I’m not a regular reader of Ken Follet or an authority on his other publications; however 'The Pillars of the Earth' was in my opinion an amazing work, possible standing apart from Ken Follet’s usual themes. The idea for the story is drawn from his skill in portraying the building of one of England’s magnificent Cathedrals, and the lives of city folk in medieval times, setting and sense of place are wonderful!
When I can get around to it (maybe on holiday) reading the sequel 'World Without End' is a must. According to reviews it promises to be just such another totally absorbing epic of historical events two centuries later.
