I am looking for the short story A&P caan someone help me find it?
>>By Chris
it should be easy to find, he wrote it on 1986
>>By ethan
you can find it in "The Harbrace Anthology of LIterature" by Jon C. Stott, et all. Second Edition. Harcourt Brace1998

Sammy reminds me of Kevin from the 'Wonder Years'. Acting in the heat of the moment. Not really thinking things through. Suffering from boredom, then creating excitement for himself by his somewhat drastic action of quitting his job.

i think saying that sammy is just a child and does not know the consequences of his actions is an oversimplification of the character. maybe you should read more into the socio-economic ties of the community, the cultures represented(i.e. elderly, fifties boom, presixties movement) and even the location.Updike shows a very volatile place and a very confused young man searching for his own truth

One day I was walking down the road when I found a tiny leperchaun sitting by an oak tree. He was chewing on an already eaten ear of corn and had soot all in his frilly orange hair. "Arrr Yee Matey!," I said to him, forgetting already that he was not a pirate but a leperchaun. I must have startled him because he qucik tossed his ear of corn aside and stood in a crotched, attack position. He growled at me and I noticed a small trickle of urine run down his tight green stockings. "What the fuck is wrong with you!", I exclaimed. He then leaped towards my throat with his glimery Irish teeth ready to gnarl at my throat. I quick pulled out my bolo and with a strong sweeping motion cut him into two. After I had roasted him on my fire and eaten him, I noticed something startling: On the bottom of his shoe was printed in bold. I AM HASEEF. A tear slid down my cheek as I remebered what my Colonial williamsburg -working mother once wrote to me in a letter written with a quill pen. "Before I die son, I want you to know the name of your real father. Haseef was his name." "NOOOOOO!!!!", I yelled. I had eaten my father, but even worse, I am part pirate.

Please help me

It was obvious that Sammy wanted to bone all of those chicks. Probable even the haggard one. Hey, when I was 19 I'd take what I could get, ya know? But anyway, Engelbert or whatever his name was (the manager dude) was probably jealous because his unit was all shriveled and non-compliant, ya hear? But for real though I liked this story because Sammy was the man for telling his boss to go F himself. I would do the same but Wal-Mart pays too well, ya know? But for real, I bet Sammy met up with those girls later and banged all three of them, probably at the same time. Maybe they did it in a sand dune or something Engelwood may have enven watched in a shadowy corner, who knows. Literature is open to interrpretation and this is how I interrpreted it.

Wrong story, bud. That was O'Connor's "The Life you save might be your own."

dude, john updike wasnt a jokester. sammy never wanted to bone down with those girls. in fact, they were the physical manifestation of everything he loathed. When the girls come in, at first he kind of respects him. They break the norm of what society claims to be decent. The A&P is the symbolization of American society. THe sheep representing the perpetual decadence humanity has thrown itself into in order to form these ideals of what is decent. what is decent? who claims what is decent? this is what updike is trying to say. the thing was that these girls, with their bathing suit, walking in the opposite direction of the "sheep", inspired him and helped him realize he was living his life, not by the way he wanted to, but under the "perpetual watch of the electric eye". But when the girls are approached by Lengel, they puss out and go the other way. the "green herring snacks flashed in her eyes". A sort of form of emotionless society is reborn within her as she realized that she did come from a society. this is why they leave. sammy never cared. it even says so in the story. in the part before the girls get kicked out, he says: "now heres comes the sad part of the story, at least my family say's it's sad but i dont think its said myself"
this goes to show that he doesnt care about them. when he leaves they're replaced by a scene of a little boy begging his mom for candy that he wouldn't get. this is when he realizes the futility of the world as it was and now he is on his own. While he knows life will be hard from now on, now that he has to take car of himself without the "white shirts his mother pressed for him", but he's not sad. In fact he's happy he's broken out of the conformity.
