I've never heard of Franny And Zooey. What's it about????? Is it his typical style? :)

Salinger is my idol. My ultimate goal in life is to write a novel that comes close but won't match The Catcher in the Rye. I love Holden Caulfield and if he were real, I'd marry him. Call me crazy, but that's how much I love this goddam book! I hate phonies.

I love the way he wrights, I love the way he talks about life. It learned me to understand boys and men in a nother kinda way. J.D Salinger is the dream person to meet.
"The catcher in the rye" is the best book I've ever read.

where can i find "hapworth 16,1924"? i've heard of the title, yet, i haven't come across it yet.

>>By ray   (Saturday, 15 Feb 2003 01:34)

Well, The Catcher in the rye is the best book I´ve ever read. But if you ask about Franny and Zooey - not, it´s not that style as The Catcher. It´s different bud also very good to read. I recommend to take that book and think about it.

This book is awesome!!! anyway what happened at the end? someone pleaze tell me

>>By Squirrel Girl   (Thursday, 20 Mar 2003 04:36)

i am just crazy about this book

i think i,m somewhat on the line of holden ;being somewhat more desiplined ,i mean to adjusting myself enough to just pass through school test ,but the problem with me is that i,m all time holden ,

see, in this novel ,too , holden considers this stuff as madman stuff happened to him.i
Ansd it seems that after those crazy days he
became desiciplined and all that stuff , he adjusted himself in the world of these phonies
.u know in this world its hard to be like crazy like this and to be successful
i just dont know what to do
hoping u people understand my pain , advise me so that i can change myself .

I read all your comments, but I think there is more to the book than phonies and madman stuff happening all the time. The book is very powerful, you just have to know how to take it. I've the read the book over a dozen times, it's interesting and the more you read the more you understand. There's a whole underlying messeage to the book and you all should read it again and look for it. J.D. Salinger is definatley one of the best american authors of the 20th century.

I just want to say something to all the readers out there that actually like this book.....YOU HAVE TO BE CRAZY.....this book is the most annoying book I have ever read....i had to read it for my english class for spring break 03' .....i was soooo sick of Holden because he is the most annoying characters ever portrayed....every other sentence is "this is gettting me depressed and everyone is a Phony"....i cant stand this book....i would never reccommend it ....becasue it has no point to it....

catcher is the greatest book of all time, its underlying message is perfect, and that girl SHrina, well if you understood his message, then you'd see your exactly what he hates.

Is this poem a reference to CITR

Going Forward

I"'"ll tell my story in my own way
Forget you, if you don"'"t see it true
The world is filled with only two
The small and large, the true and not
I am in between these worlds
Wanting to stay, but I know I can"'"t
The second are filled with lies and
Say things that they do not mean
The first are pure and clean of thought
They say things that cannot be bought
And here I enter the downward spiral ,
Hating each and every one, except my siblings,
And one more person, she"'"s just good,
I can not enter the first, it is terror.
I wear my cap, and see the birds, and yes,
I wonder where they are now that it is cold
I know I must go on, but I must protect them
Lest they fall, and if not me, then who then?
I feel the impotence of the in-between
Not here, not there, but somewhere,
The graffiti of this world is clear,
And I will get it out of here
Dead people, you know they never change,
Wrapped tight, they cannot move an inch,
In old houses and under glass, they are the same
My friends, they have a different complexion
One is bad and the other is pretty,
One with words and the other some pity,
But I just laugh and do dismiss
I will drink until I"'"m done and smoke as much as anyone
The driver said the fish are worse, that in their nature
They will survive, and they will surely stay alive.
In my nature, do I have that trait?
I"'"m not sure, till I go through that gate.
The world"'"s a pimp that you cannot trust,
Even if you have no lust
They"'"ll tell you one thing then another
They"'"ll hurt you bad, worse than a shot
If not, then just act alot.
Because that is what the outcome is,
a world just like in show biz.
I think I"'"m mad at everyone, you can call me that,
Two sisters I do declare, one that wears a hat
I like them both, no untruth there,
They won"'"t lie and they are fair.
I think that I will go out west
And put my youth to the test
I"'"ll get away and no one will know
If it"'"s rain or if its snow.
My eyes were opened by the neighbor
He knows my madness and does fore tell
The fall from grace will be like hell
I trust him, I do not know why
And he breaks my heart, with another lie.
The end is near, it"'"s filled with horses
I can see all the forces
Will not let me stay where I don"'"t belong
I can"'"t protect the unborn
I see that now, and though I do.
I still must spiral down and out
So here I go, I must go down
So that I can go through and be
Where I belong.
But don"'"t tell anyone that
For if you do, your heart will break
And I will be okay, for God"'"s Sake!

to address the original question, frany and zooie is very good. he writes in either an embedded first person style, like CITW, and in a far removed, camera angle third person like FandZ and a lot of other stuff. The story portrays sibling love, the warmth and security of it, in a topsy turvy world. Salinger loves to and is quite adapt at portraying human interaction in the most mundane action, like smoking, talking, and, as with FandZ, talking on the phone. Salinger wows readers by carefully constructing these simple scenes and extracting depth from mere action. He watched a lot of movies.

Salinger`s Catcher is the best book I`ve ever read and also the first book that I`ve read in english. It took me a lot of time but I really do think that I `ll never find something that will be as good and as true as this book.

I love his works esopecially The Catcher in the rye. I like his style and everything...he shows the reality of life...

>>By pelin   (Friday, 23 Jan 2004 13:09)

I read Catcher for a Lit class back in highschool. Yeah it was easy reading and somewhat entertaining, but it has to be the most overrated book I have ever read. What is the big deal? Why does everyone love this book? Is it because everyone loves Holden? Honestly, there is nothing in this book that makes is as great as people say it is.

>>By tooloot   (Monday, 22 Mar 2004 20:53)

First I read "The Catcher in the rye" in my native language. I took it in library, liked it so much that didn't give it back and paid money for it After years read its original version. I must say there's not any distinction. I just enjoyed once again.
haldon is a sweet one who hates everything and everyone, even himself only in his speech. I have a friend like Haldon and maybe liked him because of Haldon.
I also read his nine stories, but not in English.
Does he still keep his writings in secret?

well anyway
catcher in the rye is one of the best booke ever

>>By savage   (Thursday, 29 Apr 2004 22:14)

Salinger is mz favorite writer - has been so for years. Franny and Zooey is such a perfect book (I like to think it saved my life on a number of occasions), and the style is just supreme. I mean, what other writer could list the things in a medicine cabinet, and not make it boring... :)

>>By Dieda   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 10:47)

Catcher in the Rye is awesome and it is also my favorite Salinger work. Another favorite of mine is Teddy from the Nine Stories compilation where in salinger discussed true enlightenment.

>>By Karma Policeman   (Friday, 28 May 2004 05:38)

I loved Teddy too, it's my favourite of the short stories Salinger wrote, I prefer it over Catcher.
