I'm torn between Funeral Rites and Querelle as my favourites: Funeral Rites for the passion and pervesity of it (an elegy to his lover, killed by the Nazis, whereby the main characters are a collaborator and a Nazi soldier - and both are rendered beautifully and sympathetically) and Querelle, often posited as the perfect novel. It's structure: a crime of passion alternating with a senseless serial murder, the interplay between the characters.....breathtaking!
