the poetic description "meadows of paper flowers.........clumped in minature floating gardens...patient yangtze" hides the real disgust from the reader, hiding the fact that there are hundreds of dead bodies floating in the river yangtze. the flaoting corpses introduce the theme of death and survival the pervades throught the novel. ballards text contains serial writting that beguiles the reader with its gentleness, at the same time showing the reader the confrontations of many episodes concerning the sick, dead and dying. the fact that this is shown throught the perspective of a child is more shocking.

did anyone read the recent news story about the ocean liner offering permanent housing for affluent retirees? could this be Cocaine Nights meets Titanic and is Leonardo Di Caprio the brains behind JG Ballard? it's time to come clean.

I have only heard that Ballard was an inspiration to Anthony Burgess. Can anyonw make a recomendation for a first time reader? I know of Crash, but I wonder what the flow is of his other works?
Do you read it for the plot, the rhythm, the stylized writing?
