HJ is funnier than a spangled drongo. It is a great regret to me that I have only just started to read his books.

Just finished reading "In The Land Of Oz", a travelogue of Australia, as near as I could tell. I shouldn't base my opinion on just one book, but , contrary to popular opinion, I don't see why all the approbation for this author. Decidedly un-funny. I got maybe two chuckles out of the entire work. I'll have to read something else of his, I reckon, and hope my opinion of him as a writer improves. That I did not find him to be funny was not due to my "being an American and having no sense of humor" as he alleges, but rather , I think, to the simple fact that his own sense of humor seems rather cowardly and stunted. Just my opinion, and in fairness I shall read something else of his. Any recommendations?
