None of you reads Harry Crews? I logged in here 3 months ago to bitch about Mulching but most of Crews is great . Scarlover , Car , Celebration ,Body are all fantastic novels , like Flannery O'Conner on crank.He's funny , he's twisted and he's extremely compassionate to all of us losers . How can you not love the guy? >>By goddog Mulching was my least favorite though I wanted to like it. He was making a point but it just didn't hook me enough to finish it. I love everything else he's ever done. I got a hold of "Feast Of Snakes" when I was 14 or 15 and it made an enormous impression on me. "Gospel Singer" was brilliant. >>By Voodoo Doll I finally starting reading Crews a couple of years ago and cannot get enough. I've read everything he's published and am now starting over. His "Childhood" reminded me a great deal of my own upbringing, and his fictional world often includes Grits (the term he prefers over "rednecks," "crackers," etc.) just like everyone with whom I grew up. I appreciate his interest in characters who are dimly aware of their own desperation and their sense of not fitting in the modern world and who often can respond only through violence.
