Discussion: Haldor Laxness

I've just been recommended Laxness after a lifelong love affair with Icelandic sagas, Norse mythology and flirtations with Ibsen, Hamsunn and so forth. Any comments or pointers to his work and life gratefully received - especially if you are Icelandic!

I'd never heard of Laxness until last fall, when I saw a documentary about his life and work. Fascinated, I asked a friend coming from the U.S. to look for something by Laxness and bring it to me when he came. He brought Independent People and now I am hooked. But I've got to have someone bring me another novel.

I've seldom seen a translation into English that was so rich as Independent People. The countryside and the people came to life as I read. The protagonists epifany was so sudden and profound that I found myself brought into his very being. Beautiful.
