Discussion: Guy Davenport

Guy Davenport strikes me as one of the very few authors who seem to be writing for the future, i.e. for readers who do not as yet exist.

Absolutely the only author/translator/draughtsman whose work I revisit over and over again. Following paths Davenport has alerted me to has been the equivalent of a second bachelor's degree. His work with small presses has produced some real treasures--examples of what a book can be when author/draughtsman meets designer/printer who can understand what he is trying to do. See HERAKLEITOS, THE BICYCLE RIDER.

Les Chambres des Poetes is incorrectly listed to the left as by GD. In fact it is by Jonathan Greene. Davenport provided the introduction.

Much like Pound and Joyce, Davenport encourages/challenges the reader not only to read him, but to trace the webs of connections he strings throughout his stories. I've been reading Davenport continuously for three years now, and the stories keep getting better. I also use his writings as a menu to guide my studies.
