I am currently attempting to read "Life, a User's Manual" for the 2nd time. First attempt was about a decade ago. I was curious about the actual knight's move progression . . .the schematic of the apartment building in the appendix does not quite tie that down. Recently, I read some of Motte's book on Perec on line....just curious about how much detail he supplies re: the constraints that Perec set up. I think Motte is certainly guilty of extreme hyperbolization by opining that "Life" is the greatest book of French Literature. I do like Jacques Roubaud quite a bit....and am eagerly awaiting the English translation of the sequel to "The Great Fire of London"....I have seen the sequel in French but my French is execrable so I was hardly able to comprehend much at all. Would appreciate any input that other "flockants" might be kind to send out re: above interests.

I am reading Life A User's Manual and tryng to identify the constraints under which it was eritten. For example i read that each chapter contains 42 things that have not been mentioned before, yet when I look for the 42 things i don't find them. Does anyone have a good reference or guide?

In response to Alberto's message (above) the Bellos biography of Perec has some great tips on the various "constraints" and I believe their is an issue devoted to the whole matter of "Contemporary Fiction Review" published by Dalkey Archive. I have found a number of the Joyce references and Butor allusions/citations. I believe their is a French woman who is preparing a text on all the allusions/constraints etc.
