Captivates life in such a prominent manner. "The Palace Thief" is a masterpiece, leaving the reader with memories of high school and the perpetual battle against teachers.

I first heard about Ethan Canin on NPR. Some famous actor was reading his story "We are nighttime travellers." The next day I went out and bought the Emperor of The Air and read every story twice in one sitting. Since then I have read and enjoyed The Palace Thief, but have yet to start his novels. Blue River sits on my shelf, taunting me, and as soon as I finish with the palace Thief, again, I think I'll venture into it. What I like best about his prose is the fact that he writes stories that make the commonplace magical and profound. Less accomplished writers will look for seductive plots, fantastical and elevated plot devices, or simply choose devices to emotionally trigger responses in readers, but not Canin. His art is subtle, minimalist, ephemeral because he deals with ordinary people in ordinary circumstances finding the extraordinary through their relationships with each other. Everything canin creates is a masterpiece of character, plot and design.
