Discussion: Elizabeth Bowen

A good starting point for understanding her is her comment that she was only truly at home on the Holyhead boat. You see she was Anglo-Irish, and the boat referred provided the quickest route from London to Dublin, and thence to Cork until planes came along. Look at a gazateer for entries on Holyhead. You could link in Dylan Thomas, since Holyhead is in Wales, and of course, Thomas was Welsh.
There you go!

Hello, I am also having difficulty in obtaining information as to what inspired Bowen to write "The Demon Lover" and to the overall point of the story. I have to create an analysis on either "The Lottery" or "The Demon lover" and I feel inclined to write my paper on "The Lottery" since that is easier to pinpoint the symbolisim and themes but I wonder about "The Demon Lover" and want to find out more about it and have a good idea about what it's about so I may have a more informed descion rather than just going with the easier choice. I wonder if you can help me? I'd veyr much appreciate it. Thank you---Liza

I have to do a research paper and essay about a book, short story, poem or novel. I had chosen Elizabeth Bowen's short story "The Demon Lover." The story seems to have no secondary sources that I could use for my research. I really need help because my teacher requires us to have a secondary source for the story etc. we choose. I would appreciate your help very much! Thank you--Byron

I am doing my senior research paper on Elizabeth Bowen's "The Demon Lover" and her novel, The Last September. I have to compare and contrast the two and I aslo have to have literary analysis on the author as well as both works. It is really difficult because i can't find the literary analysis part of the two stories and there is little information on the internet.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Many different people who have analyzed the story have said that the demon lover in fact is not her old love, but a figment of her imagination. They say that since he disappeared in the first World War that when WWII happened everything started to be to much on her. War is throughout the whole story. She may have gotten a letter, some say, but that letter did not say what she thinks it did. IF you still really need some help, email me and I have analysis by like four or five people I have found. alexis0216@yahoo.com

I found some symbolism on "The Demon Lover":
#1-The "Demon Lover": symbolizes Mrs. Drovers id, meaning her side that is insatiable and pleasure seeking.
#2-her inabilaty to remember her lover's face: symbolizes her incapacity to reveal aspects of her past which she has repressed.
#3-her "idea of flight" might symbolize sexual pleasure. which reminds her of her lover.
hope this helps anyone in need.

Someone, please help! I'm writing an essay on Elizabeth Bowen's short story collection "The Demon Lover and Other Stories." I ordered a copy online, but the delivery is delayed, and I really need to start working. I have a copy of the collected short stories, and it would be great if someone could just send me a list of what stories are in that collection at black_rose226@hotmail.com, or just post it here. Thank you so much!
