| Discussion: Elizabeth Bowen A good starting point for understanding her is her comment that she was only truly at home on the Holyhead boat. You see she was Anglo-Irish, and the boat referred provided the quickest route from London to Dublin, and thence to Cork until planes came along. Look at a gazateer for entries on Holyhead. You could link in Dylan Thomas, since Holyhead is in Wales, and of course, Thomas was Welsh. They say that since he disappeared in the first World War that when WWII happened everything started to be to much on her. War is throughout the whole story. She may have gotten a letter, some say, but that letter did not say what she thinks it did.
