The Hijack, fantastic read, clever plot. Flork me when you finish it please.

>>By camban   (Thursday, 19 Aug 2004 11:52)

Hi all,
having read most of the books by ex sas, from bravo two zero to soldier five, i have jus finished reading, midnight in a burning town by christian jennings, and while at my local waterstone, i noticed a book by duncan falconer, and i'm thinking of getting it.... the book is about his time in the sbs, and i was wondering is it any good...As there was another book called by strength and guille. does anyone know which book i should start reading first.

>>By briwriter   (Thursday, 19 Aug 2004 16:33)

i think you will find they are one and the same, by strength and guile, being the moto of the sbs.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Thursday, 19 Aug 2004 23:08)

briwriter, First in Action is DF's biography, it is one of the best, funny, interesting, and unusual; buy it! Not by Strength, by Guile, Pete Mercer, is a fairly routine biog but well worth a read just for another perspective on SBS matters.

When you have read DF's biog, move on to The Hostage, his first novel, also very good, then The Hijack, his new novel, perhaps better than the first.

>>By camban   (Friday, 20 Aug 2004 11:38)

yes cambans correct bri, sorry about the mislead, but i just got first into action and i've had not by strength by guile for some time so i got confused. Cam converted me to DF and i'm glad he did, it's one of the best books i've read period, now to start on the hostage.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Friday, 20 Aug 2004 17:50)

I WANT MORE !! MORE !! MORE !!!!!!

Yes I finished the Hijack.. hmmm it left me wanting .. erm .. more !
Am finaly getting around on my have-it-new-and-need-to-read-it stack ... oh boy i need a holiday ;-)

>>By Ninjawoman   (Tuesday, 24 Aug 2004 17:14)

Re: Pete Mercer's Not By Strength By Guile. Was he actually SBS? Who can answer that one? Tho' local knowledge made it an interesting read for me...

DF location descriptions in The Hostage also serve to bring a touch of reality to his fiction, with instant recognition of those familiar places. AM does well in this area too, to the point of photographic evidence offered on his page (trident, I think).

Oh yeah...what I meant to say...
'Not By Strength By Guile' motto succeeded by 'By Strength and Guile'
Totally changes the meaning and not met with universal approval it would seem.

P.S. This message from bikergirl. Used this account coz I'm over the florking limit at the mo'

Oh yeah...me again.
briwriter, the book you saw might also have been...
Black Water: By Strength and by Guile by Don Camsell.
Just covering all options here!

>>By B.A.B.E.S   (Friday, 27 Aug 2004 13:11)

Hi B.A.B.E.S annd everyone else,
Ok thanks for all the help regarding first into action and by strength and guile, i must say from what i read, i'm thouroughly enjoying his style of writing, though havent read any of his fiction work yet, did see one in smiths but want to read this first...
well thanks again off to have a welsh cake with me cuppa, mmm tea and home made welsh cakes, being welsh is a wonderful thing...

>>By briwriter   (Friday, 27 Aug 2004 15:54)

send me a welsh cake please bri, i haven't had one for years. please pretty please!

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Friday, 27 Aug 2004 23:49)

hey I want some of that cake too, if it's possible.
I'll send some olive oil over, got me own olive plants anyway about 750 so that'll do the job. Used to make our own wine too, but we've stopped that, didn't sell any, went all into our own cellar.

Now then, just googled over to Amazon and guess what......DF's got a new book comin out next year august 2005 : The Bomb Surgeon.

Bit of a strange title I thought. Oooh well, better go back to amazon and buy the Hijack first, haven't read it yet.

>>By borisette   (Monday, 30 Aug 2004 14:41)

Wow, see thats what i'd like, nice house in Tuscanny, olive groves, swimming pool, sitting and writing my novel...oh one can but only dream....
Dear nemesis, whens the last time you had a welsh cake..
Borisette, wow a wine maker and olive oil maker......
Ok as for the welsh cakes if i could figure out how not to eat therm all, when they came fresh off the bakestone, i'd do my best to send you some borisette and nem, but as most go the way of all home cooked food espacially my mum's home made apricot sponge cake, i dont think i would have any left...
there is something about fresh home baked cakes and bread... ok need to go and find something in the fridge. bye

>>By briwriter   (Monday, 30 Aug 2004 19:04)

Bri : I know what you mean with fresh home baked bread and cakes...
Try fresh baked bread and some chocolate spread......simply devine ! As long as you don't look inthe mirror afterwards while trying on your bathing costume........

>>By borisette   (Tuesday, 31 Aug 2004 13:30)

Did someone mention chocolate........?

>>By Majorette   (Tuesday, 31 Aug 2004 14:04)

Ok girls chocolate, mmmm i love that new cadbury's dream white chocolate with strawberries... mmmmm As for chocolate things, this is probably more an american thing but they get a peanut butter and chocolate spread in a jar, that some fresh warm bread or a bagel and some fluff...And if you dont know what fluff is well lets just say on warm bread with chocolate and peanut butter its amazing...

>>By briwriter   (Wednesday, 1 Sep 2004 02:31)

Chocolate and Duncan ??? Hmm very nice combo! Whilst reading his books I got urges to eat something dark and soft with a bit of a bite in there. Maybe Duncan can market his own brand ? "Suckle on Dunnies, the new flavour "? Does anyone think it will work ?

>>By Ninjawoman   (Friday, 3 Sep 2004 21:55)

Hello !! Just visited my favo online bookstore and what do I find ??

Duncan Falconer " The Bomb Surgeon" August 2005 !

288 pages and no idea if it will be Mike Stratton again but I like the title already.

>>By Ninjawoman   (Saturday, 4 Sep 2004 23:09)

Now that everybody is crowing over Andy McNab's book signing I was wondering if anyone else knows if Duncan does something like that ?
Any thoughts ?

>>By Ninjawoman   (Monday, 1 Nov 2004 13:40)

From Amazon....The Bomb Surgeon...
********************
In war-torn Iraq Stratton's closest friend is killed whilst on operation, leaving behind a grieving wife, Sally, and baby son, Josh, Stratton's own godson. Within a week Sally is dead and Josh is in state custody in LA. Stratton discovers Sally has been brutally murdered and together with Seaton, a CIA ally, traces her killers to an Albanian crime syndicate, former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Behind it all is a complex FBI cover-up that goes all the way to the top. Setting out on a private mission of revenge, Stratton seeks justice in the only way he knows how ...But then Josh is kidnapped as a warning to Stratton and the FBI and CIA put a price on his head for igniting a vicious war with the Albanian crime boss, Skender. Armed only his wits and an extraordinary skill with explosives, Stratton takes on Skender's colossal backstreet army. With Josh's life at stake and fuelled by a tormenting sense of guilt for failing his old friend, Stratton prepares to give up his life for what appears to be his final mission against all odds: to bury Skender and his entire syndicate in the rubble of their empire ...literally.

Found some interesting news on Duncan Falconer, may be of interest to some of his fans here :

Author information

Duncan Falconer
Represented by: Andrew Lownie Literary Agency

After an upbringing in an orphanage in North London he moved to
Battersea where he lived and went to school and at 17 joined the
Royal Marines. Due to a series of unusual circumstances he found
himself attending the Special Boat Squadron selection in Poole,
Dorset at just 19 years old. Out of almost 150 men, he and 8 others
managed to get through the gruelling selection course. He
subsequently went on to serve a dozen years in the SBS, many of them
as an anti-terrorist undercover operator.

He was a pioneer of modern maritime counter terrorism and was
involved in operations during the Falklands as well as conventional
Special Forces operations around the world. On completion of his
Service he joined the `civilian sector' where he continued to use
and improve his skills operating mostly alone in hostile
environments instructing, information gathering, risk advising and
assessing, and sometimes becoming involved in such diverse and
dangerous activities as running poaching-hunting operations in West
Africa.

In the last few years Falconer has operated at length and most often
alone in places such as Afghanistan, Palestine, Liberia and
throughout Iraq. In between all of this he has managed to write
several screenplays, create a TV show and novels using characters he
encounters on his travels. He now lives anywhere between his three
bases in England, North America, and South Africa.

God I love this kind of life !

Please ! Don't tell me I am alone here .. but the duncanfalconer.com looks ok to me. Nice pics and details about the new and upcoming book, looks like another winner to me. Could do with a photo gallery type of thing but other then that.. ok. 3 stars out of 5 from me.

>>By Ninjawoman   (Sunday, 16 Jan 2005 21:15)

Nice but indeed could use some more stuff. The newsletter is great though.
One question: the links don't seem to work (yet?) really, nor does contact. Is that a problem on my side or do more have trouble with it?

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 17 Jan 2005 15:12)

The website is a work in progress, just started. More links and all coming soon.

>>By Just Jon   (Monday, 17 Jan 2005 21:00)

I should make clear, I only know this because I checked when the site was created. Also, a links page with only three links was a clue. Looks like they're testing and getitin' it up and running, from the looks of it it should be damned impressive soon.

>>By Just Jon   (Monday, 17 Jan 2005 22:14)

Seems like the "contact "button on Duncan Falconer's site is working, but i haven't tried it out yet

>>By spiketheprovo   (Sunday, 23 Jan 2005 16:44)

They've added an awesome gallery to duncanfalconer.com, really cool pictures. Definitely worth checking out.
