As an American of mixed origin: Zapotec, European, I think Derek Walcott in his lovely and long poem Omeros, faces the problem we all have in America: our roots have been erased and we need them to grow whole. Derek has found his roots and he shows us in that poem the way to find them again. For this reason his work is fundamental for all Americans, specially the ones with mixed blood. And most important, he creates beauty when teaching us the ways to our inner soul!

I just read about DW in the Feb 3 issue of the New Yorker. I had heard about his work before only in short references in articles and discussions with people who are better read than I am. I just ordered the latest FSG compilation of his work. Really pleased to read the comments above and hear that he writes about American identity, rootlessness and growing roots.

Maybe I'll check in after I read through his poems.
