Everybody I know who has read Ghostwritten has said much the same thing. I have not read it yet, but I have it on my to read list (like so many others!)
I recently read his third novel, Cloud Atlas; it was fantastic. From what I have heard of his other books (without having actually read them - a dangerous thing to do!) he seems to use many of the same constructs in Cloud Atlas as he does in the previous two: a varied cross-section of people as narrators, each giving a different perspective on a theme. It appeared the theme of Cloud Atlas was power. Although I was wary of the 'Russian dolls' format of storytelling at first, I soon warmed to it and by the second half of the book (the conclusions of each story) I was thoroughly gripped.
An excellent book by a very accomplished writer. Highly recommended.

:O)

Cloud Atlas has been excellent so far. Even the scifi parts. Thebizarre Australian dialect in that middle chapter was just too painful to read.

i've read cloud atlas, the man is a master of styles... its awsome how he can switch from one to the next, he forces you to change your entire mind set between each story... as for the stories themeselves, they are surprisingly human, and not at all manufactured... beautiful book!

I was just writing about murakami because I wanted to write about david mitchell but I forgot to include it. His use of style is absolutely impressive. the australian bit I didn't read-I found it difficult and I live there-many australians did as well-but maybe I should go back and try it again-there's a reason the editor left it in there.....anyways I can't wait to see more!

i read Black Swan Green several months ago. It was one of my favorite books of the year. There are certain aspects of it that make it magnificent....in the sense you lower the book to your lap and look out and think "bloody hell.....that's exceptional" but I won't tell you what they are b/c they are a bit of a spoiler. Its too bad that The Kite Runner and The Memory Keeper's Daughter and everything by Jodi Picoult has eclipsed the light that is this book. I think J.D. Salinger would have a friend in David Mitchell......but there's something else as well.....
This is a book that you caress the cover of ten years later and read again!
I could say so much more but I don't won't to raise your expectations any more.
also this is a writer you don't want to rush.....in a sense I love that he takes his time because he always get its right....
and for people who have read it out there-
whats up with the weird house in the woods?
does David Mitchell always just throw red herrings in there to disturb you?
I mean it had more application than the australian things in cloud atlas.....
but it wasn't necessary....
anyways let me know if you have a comment on this
