So I'm french and I one of his fans.First I love reading and after a book a bit complicated like Le Contrat Social by Rousseau it's very relaxing to read his books.I loved each of them and I'd like to say he makes me crying each time I'm finishing one of his books.I'd really like to communicate with him(it is surely a dream but let's have a try as somebody said) so my e-mail adress is: TheTomOthax@aol.com.Once again I love your style and your imagination.

David Gemmel: An Amazing Philosopher, worshiped by plenty however hidden from so many. Even though unintentional, David has created characters which can be related to by every one. A true artist.

Fo me, Mr. Gemmel is able to create charactors and worlds that appear real enough to care about. He focuses on story and the relationship between charactors not on gadgets and gimmicks.
Above all he is entertaining. Granted he isn't J.J. Rousseau, but then again who is.

David Gemmel is a truly brilliant author, and is certainly my personal favorite. He uses an exceptional style of character and plot development in all of his stories, by creating the story through the view of different characters. His philosophy and concept of war is very intelligent. He knows how to describe very tactical and accurate battle strategies, as well as being able to fully go into the existentialism and reasoning behind war itself. He has created monumenal characters in "Druss", "Waylander", or "Seiben".
My favorite aspect of Gemmel's work is his use of the theme of will power. He explains how will is truly the most powerful driving force, capable of taking on the most destructive forces. This theme is best shown in the character of Druss.
Basically, Gemmel kicks ass. Read his shit, or you will miss out.

After picking up Wolf in the Shadow (Jon Shannow novel) i have become hooked on David's books. I am currently reading Waylander II and i have to say it is excellent. Mr Gemmel is truly and expert in the adventure narative and genre. I am even thinking about doing an article in my university Magazine when his next novel hits the shelves. I will atempt to contact him Via Orbit publishers, with whom i have managed to contact Iain M Banks.
Many thanks
Tom

David Gemmel. The finest living writer of heroic fantasy. I agree with that statement, all other writers pale in comparisson. The first Gemmel book I read was 'Sword in the Storm' when i was 14 (a year ago now) and I became hooked within moments. And best of all.... he's english! WHOO HOO!

I think that David Gemmel is the most entertaining, and most spell binding novelist. His books are the work of pure genious. Dont' diss him, oke doke.

Ever since i started reading his books i haven't been able to put them down and every time i finish i wait in anticipation for his next there are 2 writters that are absolutly fantastic and i can't get enough of and that is david gemmel and raymond e feist and if them to ever got together for a joint venture i think it would be one of the most exiting and valuble books to get your hands on..
so now i've put the idea there how about it.

Gemmel isn't a master of modern literature, nor a storyteller of mystic proportions. He isn't even a complex novelist of notable prestege. He's all these and more. He is "A man to walk the mountains with", and an aspiring writer I'll always treasure his astounding influence on my writing. He'd make a fine Irishman.

I've only read Sword in the storm and just completed Midnight Falcon and they are two of the best books I have ever read. I just bought Ravenheart and i haven't been able to put it down. I've never been so drawn into characters before. I would highly recommend these books to anyone. Gemmel is a genius

god ive read at least 6 of his books and i must admit his writin is fantastic his chracators r so belivable! he is the greatest writier of all time and personally think if they made a film based on the chronicles of druss the deathwalker, it would be far better than lord of the rings! Gemmel rules
>>By denz from norn iron
Gemmel is one of the most spellbinding writers ever to put pen to paper, although its time for him to develope some new characters to help us to once again submerge ourselves in fantasy.

I havent read a david gemmel book...(couln't be bothered) but i read the part bout mulgrave's dream being in a blackberrie pie with a white bear (Stormrider) wat the #*%$ iz with that???

David Gemmlls books are the only SF books i read. No other author ( apart from Wilbur Smith ) can create characters of such a heroic nature. Such men as Druss, Waylander and Jon Shannow have the raeder turning page after page. Apart from Legend, my personal favourite is Echoes of the Great Song, VIRUK is quite obviously a madman, and i urge all Gemmell fans to read it if they haven't already!!! I agree with denz from norn iron, the prospect of a movie about Druss is more appealing to me than Lord Of The Rings ever could be, imagine Druss coming to life on the big screen, then there would be some severe ass kickin' action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way also read King Beyond the Gate, some outstanding characters in that bad-boy too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May the Source protect you all !!!!!

I read different authors for different reasons though I do stay within SF/Fantasy. Some like L.E. Modessit I read as he can explain everything so that even magic makes logical sense. Others are simply imaginative ...for an example of this read Jason Cosmo. However Gemmel is my favorite not because he is the best writer or because his characters are so believable: but because he seems to focus on telling a story instead of obsessing over minute details. I wonder if all his books are literary creations by intent or more just his daydreams put on paper. (to support this hypothesis note that he does own an axe he calls snaga and other weapons)
>>By diesson
Read the first chapter of "The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend" and you will not put it down. David Gemmel is The Shit. 'Nuff said.
>>By myhumbleopinion
David Gemmel is the one Fantasy author today who actually writes great characters without bothering to create an elaborate series around them. It seems very easy, as if every time he is just going to visit a friend. His style is also the most elegant in modern Fantasy.

i love gemmel im just waiting for something about caris the axeman. A monster of legend>
I've been into Fantasy for years (not fey rubbish about nymphs prancing around with unicorns - but intelligent stuff with believable characters). I have read and enjoyed loads of writers but Gemmel is the best. I'd never been able to interest my other half in reading any Fantasy but I started reading Gemmel to him while we were driving into work and he loves it! He won't read anyone else but Gemmel in the genre but at least he's stuck with the best! I'm running out of books for him to read now though - more please!!!!!!!!!!

Everything Gemmel has done is a crass, even grotesque mimicry of Tolkien. This is true of the majority of fantasy writing from to David Eddings to Robert Jordan. Read decent material! Stop lying to yourselves! Start writing yourself and it will instantly dispel this deluded, lame appreciation of Gemmel. He is a crude, truncated writer. Yes, he is "the shit".
>>By oldoddjobs
ive read alot of Gemmel, feist, eddings etc. no one compares to this guy, stylistically subtle yet powerful, driving addictive narrative, sublimly realistic characters, great knowledge of the causes, trails, tragedies and theories of warfare. yet never disconnected from his characters and their destiny's. a man with a brilliant mind, brilliant hand and brilliant heart. keep it up we need you.
>>By paulk
oldoddjobs should really learn to express himself a little better if he really wants people to listen to him. i agree Eddings,Feist, Jordan etc all owe a lot to Tolkien. But Gemmel is beholding to no one. He is the most compassionate, most addictive sublty inventive heroic fantasy writer since the great "inkling". Write less and read more Mr. O.O.J you might actually enjoy it and may even learn some grammar in the process, "from to David Eddings" really, need i say more.

At first i thought David Gemmell was a the greatest heroic fantasy writer in the world that was a year ago and i had just finished his second Druss book. but then i began to read more of his books which mosty with a great exseption to raven heart where a disappointment. if you take the time a read a lot of his books you'll soon find that his characters never answear a dierect question examples you can find in his second lastest one hero in the shadows sword in the storm and deathwalker which i now think was a load of shit as he made up some crap story that could be stuck on to legend, you find that there is no metion of druss and the the nadir no each other but apparently there old friends who fought along side each other many years ago, so unlike most of the people here i don't think that he well in shout "probably the finest living writer of heroic fantasy
>>By sputnik the paddy
ok maybe what i said befour was a bit harsh if it was'nt for david gemmell i would'nt have a clue what to do with myself. He is i suppose a good writer, but not the best. that i am certain of his books are a bit simple and it looks sometimes that he is a bit of a show off, he used the word keltoi which means celts, and i think he new that there was very few people out there that would no that and as well the gold coin thing where your dead and in the voild he took that from the romans. also one last thing watch brave heart and read raven heart and then make up your mind, is he a good writer. but like make up there i do think he would make a better irish man.

I love epic fiction. Started reading it by borrowing "Lord of the Rings" from a friend about ten years ago. I was into L.E.Modessit for a year or two after that which i found quite interesting in spite of the large chunks of complex (in some cases boring and unnessecary) detail that dominated parts of his books. I then attempted reading David Eddings which i found very dissapointing. Then i discovered David Gemmel. I must have read most of his books, some of them more than once (or twice!). I am afraid to buy another book because i might decide to skip work, in order to finish it within a single day! What i like most is the concept of the temple of the Thirty which appears in a number of books. His characters are so much life - like, you sometimes forget that they are not real. Also what i find quite interesting is the similarity of events taking place within the books to real historic events in ancient England and Greece as well as similarity with ancient eastern and western mythology. This guy has done his homework!
Everybody should try a ride upon the David Gemmel experience!

I love his books. But I can foresee his next book. There is an old man who is a bit crude, about 6' 6 and wields an axe. Another man who is a bit quiet but, hates the big man but eventually dies for him. There is a bladesman who has done something wrong but is still the best warrior in the land. They are all about 35-40 years old and they all die for some hopeless cause. I cant wright it, so I hope DG keeps on doing it. And for all you americans, I dont think he bases Legend on the Alamo. There were a number of battles before that, belive it or not.

THESE BOOKS ARE F... GREAT !!! ... But the end of White Wolf is crap. Druss is dead. It's part of the legend. So please David, don't make him reborn. Just creat another greater heroes !!! ( the grey man was not so bad héhé ).
Not as good as Tolkien ( but who can ?? ) but still amazing. Congratulation David.
Sorry for my poor english, I'm french. Nobody's perfect :-))
