>>By christina   (Saturday, 7 Jun 2003 19:22)

has anybody read any of johnny 'two combs' books????

>>By christina   (Sunday, 8 Jun 2003 20:29)

Hi Christina,

I've read Direct Action by Johnny (Two Combs) Howard.

The difference between AM's writing and J (TC) H, is much like the difference between Scotch whisky and Lambs navy rum!

One is literary "correct" the other is Enid Blyton with "knobs" on. As in, one has to read JH, while AM is more your Comic Strip whizz-bang rubber-band sherbert dip-sticks = easy read...

>>By buddy   (Monday, 9 Jun 2003 20:28)

ok that didnt confuse me !?!?!?!?!?!
some people say its more of an information book is that what you meant come on im thick here!?
can you write that again in more simpler terms please

>>By christina   (Monday, 9 Jun 2003 20:34)

exams have turned me into a thick zombe i need sleep must go now bye

>>By christina   (Monday, 9 Jun 2003 20:43)

Simpler terminology:

Johnny (TC) Howard's style of writing has an intellectual edge!! Whether that has any thing to do with ghost writer influence, who can say = big words...Having said that, JH portrays a much more serious slant on life = deep thinker.

Whereas, Andy McNab's writing is easy-come easy-go boy talk = no big words. When I say easy-come -easy-go I mean words below 6th grade student level. Therefore, should be little need for any pregrad reader to go seek a thesaurus or dictionary.

Simple enough?

>>By buddy   (Tuesday, 10 Jun 2003 09:36)

yep thats simple enough exams have this efect on me they turn we thick for a couple of days will recover soon dont think i will read JTCH for a while yet have way toooooo much to read already

Dear all,

Thank you so much for your support on this discussion board, and indeed my web-site
(www.dean-francis.co.uk)

I really do appreciate your positive comments, and it is a great feeling to know that so many of you would like to see my work published.

However, could I please ask you NOT to e-mail Orion books. Despite 2ic's comments, it really won't help my cause and I have discussed this in depth with 2ic who offers his apologies to both you and me.

I understand he thought he was 'doing me a favour', but from a publishers point of view, this would appear unprofessional and 'amateurish'

Please keep posting here, and I encourage as many of you as possible to contact me via the web-site - I'm always happy to discuss my work or forward sample chapters to people who enjoy my writing.

Thank you all again, and I Iook forward to posting you all signed copies if and when Fair Target is published

Kind Regards
Dean Francis

I guess this also means the name Dean Francis is one
they noticed at Orion ;-)

Hi Dean, thanx for your personal note here and I'm sure
any of us will keep supporting you on your way...

Looking forward to that signed copy...

>>By Sheba   (Friday, 13 Jun 2003 21:33)

ok then im not going anywhere i meant ive given up on the jon steele book it was getting slow and boring.

>>By christina   (Saturday, 14 Jun 2003 12:31)

Could anyone fill me in on how this publishing works?
I mean how long does it take before you hear from
Orion or any other publisher when you send in your book?
And then it has to be edited or something?
How long before a book is in the shops?
Forgive me for asking but I never thought about these things
before.

>>By Lynn   (Sunday, 15 Jun 2003 21:55)

Oh Lynn, speaking as someone who only knows a little, let me tell you that publishers or/and agents request a writer's work and ask the author not to expect a reply for 6-8 weeks. then they usually send out a bog standard 'thanks for your work but it's not for us' letter. The author then starts again. To put it into perspective, most BIG publishing houses receive between 100-150 submissions per WEEK !!! They only request more samples from around 10% of this figure. Depending on budget they might publish 10-25 new books per year. 25-30% of these will be by celebs etc who weren't even in the original 100-150 in the first week!!
So in a nutshell, out of approximately 8000 submissions from would-be UNKNOWN authors in a year, 3 or 4 will get their work into print. And that's just for ONE publishing house. When you take into account 'unforseen circumstances' that SAS related books run into, the odds for Dean et al, are very long...
Mr McNab and friends also have to give it the OK
(and even when they say yes, you're looking at 6-12 months before your book hits the shelves!)

But as they say, the tougher the nut the sweeter the fruit (or somfink like that ;-) )

hi thank you for the info very interesting !

>>By christina   (Monday, 16 Jun 2003 22:20)

Has anyone tried out the guest map on Dean's site yet? It's great and we'll be able to see how far out we all stretch here!

>>By Sheba   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 09:15)

Oooooh, I like that feature! Thanks, Sheba! Makes a very nice visual aid!

>>By am-i-binned   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 11:29)

And you know so much Sheba ;-)
Thanx, I didn't know and it's really interesting - and really hard to get work published.
Let's just hope you're one of those sweet fruits..
I'll check out the Dean Francis site too.

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 15:17)

?? A sentence fell off... Must be drk fooling me.
Meant to say ..you know so much Sheba ;-)
You're being too modest

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 15:20)

Geez, it crossed my mind that it's maybe a good thing that DF's website does not have a "visitor counter" feature -- I would have skewed it big time today looking at that map! LOL! Now that I know about it, I keep popping in to see if anyone else has indicated where they're located!

Okay [shrug], so patience is not my strongest suit...

And, my gosh! Talk about fortitude! Considering what you've shared, Sheba, about what's involved with publishing, it seems a new author would have a better chance of winning a million-dollar lottery! But if worse comes to worst, maybe we could all get together and convince Dean to self-publish so we could end our misery and buy his stories directly from him! Hey, wait a minute -- weren't we planning a visit to DF's house? (Or was it an assault on his PC?) Curses! That elusive Q. Mark never did get back to us, did he? And I think I've just about given up all hope of Hoarwithy ever coming back with the bus... so sad, been missin' him....
