Yeah, its the "Divine Comedy", Dante's poem in three parts: Inferno, Purgatory, Paradise. Its really just one big poem but its frequently published in three parts, three books.
If you're into it, there's a really good new version of "Dante's Inferno" that just came out. It all written in contemporary english and its illustrated with some amazing drawings that sets the whole thing in America today....like McDonald's, freeways, parking lots, Holiday Inn, etc.
Check it out
"Dante's Inferno" by Sandow Birk.

If you want to compare Dante with a similar piece from the middle ages, try Boccaccio's "Decameron" and Chaucer' "The Canterbury Tales". These are both collections of instructive, moral and sometimes bawdy tales; which contain motifs that are similar to "The Divine Comedy". In "The Miller's Tale" from Chaucer's work for example, a character gets branded on the behind for his actions and this echoes the type of retribution inflicted for sinning in Dante's work. The religious parallels and philosophical elements are also fascinating.
