Gifted biographer has done bios of several literary figures. I recently completed reading her biography of 17th century Samuel Pepys; though I dallied with this over several months, I really loved it. A great deal of the book is based directly on Pepys' own famous diary, but Tomalin has used his manuscript with marvelous care and with great respect for the gifts of the diarist. Although the tone of the Pepys bio changes, at least somewhat, at that point in time when the relatively young Pepys ceased keeping a diary, Tomalin's accomplishment remains truly impressive and a delight to read. Pepys lived through the 17th century conflicts over religion in England: Puritanism, Tudor Protestantism, and royal Catholicism. The book also encompasses the great fire of London. Highly recommended.
