His profound wisdom has changed my life. I gained the courage to cut out my own eyeballs. I am blind but now I truly see.

I was a maniac and a pyromaniac and then I read The Teachings of Don Juan and I was still a pyro but I did burn down a few buildings and felt angry so I burnt down my own house and burnt to death in hideous pain AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

What an insipid, dull experience this book was. I took myself and this apparently inspirational work into the desert, accompanied by only my camel and a sponge cake in an desperate attempt to find salvation. I found nothing. To be completely honest I am writing this from beyond the grave, I never made it back to the town, instead I burried myself in the sand dunes and waited for the vultures to eat the flesh from my decaying bones.

So I rested here, a carcass among carcasses and then a light carried me away. I returned to earth one last time, to make a defamantory comment about this idiotic author and reep revenge on mankind.

Excellent series on an unusual perspective of reality. Anyone who thinks there is "more than this" should investigate this series.

>>By ixtlan

Whether Carlos made it all up or not, the principles do exist, both concrete and abstract. Carlos himself is a complete fool but then he admits that doesn't he?Hell1 if he actually followed the teachings would he have died of liver cancer?well i don't know i wasnt there. Any way the books changed my life.

Knowledge is a perception of the mind, there to teach us how to move. and moving is all we do.

Reading Casteneda and help from Grandfather Peyote has changed my outlook on life...

I think Carlos Casteneda offers deep insight into the nature of our personal reality. Anyone who reads & understands Don Jaun's Teachings can benifit greatly, can achieve a sense of well being and perhaps unlock hidden realms of perception.

>>By Genaro

This body of work is actually a clever mix of fact and fiction meant to convey a series of teachings. Many of the stories about Carlos' experiences are actually parables that convey the teaching that is discussed in that section. Books 1 and 2 were written before Carlos understood the import of what he was being shown, so start with "Journey to Ixtlan" which was meant to be a teaching conveyed in book form. Ater reading books 3 through 7 go back and read 1 and two then you'll understand them properly. These books are very deep and warrant multiple readings to absorb tham properly.

the knowledge that don juan talks abt can not be obsorbed thru the intellect, no matter in what order you read it, at most, all you will get are "tales of power". Carlos himself was many times asked wether his writings were a strange mixture of fiction & fact, He always maintained Don juan was a real person, as real as you "think you are" but in a different way. confirm for yerself the mysteries "Don Juan" speaks about, & get out of your head, the truth about it is people like Don juan did exist, & he may still exist.

>>By Genaro

So it all happened in his reality but he never seemed to have understand the wisdom. To me he was a story teller. The wisdom exists for all to experience. It takes a huge change in lifestyle and an understanding of the true nature of perception. I am still struggling but I have begun to creep.

Just the act of reading these books is an alternative reality, realise this and nothing else matters (until we snap back into the "mundane?" reality that we are used to, where everything matters). Imagine something now, anything, is this imaginative state not a different state of conciousness? Abandon logic! (If you are trying to understand why you should abandon logic then you are far from doing it) logic is just the logical interperetation of the perceptive state that we are experiencing, and accustomed to. Don Juan talks about indulgences, the intellect is the greatest indulgence we have. Accept nonsense and you will be free - "free" is actually the logical interperetation! Accept that you are reading this to learn, and do it. Have a nice day

>>By cosmo

Using logic and being practical is what these teachings are all about. It must also be said that any teaching must be absorbed by the intellect before the knowledge is made useful. To say that you can read a book with no thought is ridiculous. This series was highly logical and was made to appeal to the intellectual. Don Juan did not ask Carlos for sheer faith, he maintained that these teachings were first and above all else practical and useful. Don't you think using the name Genaro, considering the setting, stinks with self importance. All personal history must be erased along with these ridiculous egos.

wow $$$$$ was this what it was all about. As for the rest of us. What self importance. That which can be told is not the real ------. However enjoy all the manifestations.

>>By hyacinth

After reading one of C.C.'s last books-"The active side of infinity"- the chapter called-The mud shadows-realy shocked me! I'm not going to explain it, but I can feel that It's true. Read this book and then examine the movie-"The matrix"-more closely, & see how they relate. Then practice silence.

>>By i in i

Someone else noticed...good. The Matrix "borrowed" much from Mr. Castaneda. As Don Juan taught Carlos to "see" the energy structures of matter...Neo learned the same in the end of The Matrix, but Neo was seeing data instead of pure energy. This could possibly be a closer representation of reality than seeing energy, but computers were scarce in Don Juan's day so this analogy would never have been made then. Neo also mastered "dreaming" in that he could change the Matrix (the dream) with his will thereby producing a change in the physical world. There are other things too, but you must pay attention. The Matrix , of course, is pure entertainment and not meant to be taken as a religeon, so do not think I am doing so...I do have a life.

>>By Flatman

One other thing ..will the future bring in a new shamanism, Technoshamanism , if you will, as virtual reality becomes reality? VIrtual reality could seriously enhance dreaming as all of the tiny details of the dream could be maintained by the machines.

i keep waking up, in by bed but not quite waking up, actually i think im dreaming my room, but i cant move or do anything, i cant follow the normal dreaming procedures prescribed by castaneda, does anyone know what this is or what to do,

thank you
crallon

>>By crallon

This is a normal state of conciousness that ocurs between sleep and being awake. Sometimes your brain wakes up before your brain leaving you paralyzed and unable to feel your body. This happens to me occasionally, and has happened since childhood. If you focus on this state and maintain it it can facilitate lucid dreaming. Usually people "panic" when they find themselve unable to move and finish waking up. Becoming awake in a dream is a handy trick if you can maintain your cool. If you concentrate on these experiences they will continue to occur; if you forget about them they go away. I have managed to launch fully controlled dreams from this state, but sometimes I fall asleep again...

>>By The Flatman

Correction : "Sometimes your brain wakes up before the body"
this is correction to line 1 of last post. Sorry for shoddy writing.

>>By The Flatman

Castaneda filled the void that church could not fill. The only reason that I can still have faith is because he showed how to make spirituality and the process of being a man personal. He will always have my thanks as a warrior for giving me the courage to go on. He illustrated that he might be as big a fool as myself yet continued to face the unknown. I never got the chance to thank him while he was here so I hope wherever he is he can gain energy from my thanks.

PBS is airing a 2-part series on Oct. 28 on the superstring theory: "the theory proposes that everything consists of tiny strings of energy. If the notion is correct, it could offer a bridge between relativiity, which explains space, and the tiny quantum realm." Popular Mechanics magazine, Oct. '03 issue, I think.

If you have read about the superstring theory, does it not sound like Casteneda's description of "luminous beings?" And how he learned to travel using the "strings" and all those weird visits? It always cracked my up when he would keep asking Don Juan if it was real or not. The newest superstring theory talks about an 11-dimensional universe. Good stuff!

It has been about 15 or 16 years since I read the books for the first time, so I'm a bit fuzzy. Guess I'' read 'em again!

>>By Seeker

it has been 20 years since i read castenada and my primary recollection is how much it reminded me of zen teachings and taoism.regardless of what you think of the hocus pocus he definitely presented some ancient and powerful wisdom in a fresh way, particularly in a separate reality.

>>By goddog

I read his books during the '90s and I have to give him credit for altering the way I looked at the world. Also loved the books by Taisha Abelar and ... the one's by .... whatsername.

So I was very disappointed when I realized after attending two of the 'Tensegrity' workshops that it was all a crock - totally about $$$$. Casteneda though was a superb speaker who kept everyone spellbound.

As for lucid dreaming, that's not hard to do if you just pick up a how-to book on it. I've done it many times. The difference between lucid dreaming and CC's Dreaming (capital D) is that Dreaming is the same as Out of Body Experiences - which generally begin with vibrations.
