Discussion: Carlos Castenada

Hello, in high school I read Journey to Ixlan and I vaguely remember a discussion about "hunting-warrior"

It turns out that my name Orion Kriegman means just that. Orion the hunter. Krieg is German for War, Man means man.

Does anyone remember what Castenada said about this concept?

Don Juan talked to Carlos about the art of stalking which is one of the steps neccesary in becoming a warrior. A warrior's challege is to become impeccable in mind and body. This is all I remember on that but I will look this up.

I'm in high school as well and find Don Juans teachings very captivating, and Carlos did an excellent job of understanding and interperating the techings. Some of the things he had trouble concieving were rather hysterical and I found it amusing when he bacame stumped. As well I find it humorous that Carlos quit the apprenticeship multiple times yet returned to find the same thing he ran from.

A warrior accomplishes four things, one;treat every moment as if it's your last two;you must look at every situation with clarity, three;do not become over confident, and four;old-age.

I read Tales of Power when it first came out and I thought it was a powerful book. 30 years later I still remember the charactors as if they are still good friends. I think that this book is a classic and ranks up there with Mark Twain for adventure. Fact or fiction makes no difference to me

I am just about done with Journey to Ixtlan and I know the next books go into further detail. I beleive whether the documentaries are fact or fiction, you as the reader must accept, there is a certain amount of otherworldly things happening. The proverbial phrases that Don Juan speaks of throughout the book cannot be denied. This race of men that once roamed the earth, that have seemed to of died out "saw" more of the world we live in than just, for instance, what is in the visible spectrum. Everyone has the ability to use your entire mind, of which, we use only a small percentage of. There are worlds out there which we dont understand. The world just seems to cover it up with technology and new Ideas that destroy the old ones.

Anyone out there who practices or has practiced any of the methods taught by Juan Matus to Castenada--stalking and/or dreaming? I have been trying for years to silence the internal dialogue, and to see my hands in dreaming. It's extremely difficult and I am still largely unsuccessful. Western life stifles results, or perhaps it is because I am empty.

Hey Hank,
I dont think its because you're empty, rather the western life-style creates many unnecessary obstacles on your way of practicing these methods.
Besides, I do not think it is useful in the least to start working on techniques all by yourself, you have GOT to have a teacher, like Carlos had Don Juan - without being overly melodramatic I'll tell you that with no guidance you may encounter unspoken dangers, from which you may not necessarily re-emerge alive and intact. That is the reason that I have not started practicing the more complicated exercises.
I think it is better to work on cleaning up your mind, working on impeccability of both mental and physical bodies, preparing yourself for the future meeting of that Guide.

I remember reading Carlos many moons ago. The air was thick with the smell of combustibles incence and that unmistakable pong of wet shaggy afgan coats, bought on the Portabello Road Market. I was at the London Central School of Art, now Central St Martins. What sort of drugs was that guy on. Tales of Power was a classic. The way of the Warrior was much discussed in coffee bars and snugs inthe local watering holes. If you spouted off too much, then it was your turn to put in the next round, but a pint in those days was an affordable comodity. Well old age is fast catching up,live every day to the full. Timeless Good Advice. Mrs. T once said the one thing she could not stand was wishywashy people, so we formed a club, My acronym came about when I accepted the worst (fag) washing up prefects pans and dishes at a distinguished military acadamy. So I wear it with wishywashy Pride thanks Carlos. By wishywashy monday nov 22 2004
