i have just read Jessica by Bryce, it is a brilliant book, i couldnt pu it down once i started reading.

if you read it all you would find at the end a letter from Jessica to Jack revealing the father of the child.

once we started reading Jessica we couldn't put the book down. it was a thrilling adventure. It was special because it gave us an insight on a remarkable women who lived close to our home town.

jessica was an excpetional book the best i have ever read, she is an inspiration to me and a great Aussie heroine.

The Power Of One inspired me to do things I had never even dreamed of - I went out with my head held high and didn't let anyone get in the way of my dreams, but I took time to listen to what people have to say and I learnt that silence can be the best teacher. Thanks to the inspiration I received from BC's book, I am now studying law at Oxford University and it's become at lot easier to meet people because of BC's advice (or should I say Peekay's)...

Yes Tandia is the sequel to the Power of One and no there isn't another one after that. Of course Peekey is dead, he would never have gone into the cave to see Doc if he was going to live. The Power of One is definitely Courtenay's best, although Tandia comes close. Well done in getting into Oxford Amanda, I agree how inspiring the story is - well, I have read it four times, so far!

I knew Peekay was dead I just couldn't accept it. Why did he have to die. Anyway thanks to The Power of One and Tandia I too want to study law. I wish there were a sequal to Tandia. It could be about Lumukanda. See ya.

bryce courtenay is one of australias all time great authours. i have read everyone of his books and i have to say the power of one was the best by far. Peekay is a great chatacter and the portrayel of his struggle against racial divisions was great. it also gave me an insight to world war two and helped to to see the perspective from both sides. Tandia was a lot different i thought. i loved the way ho whe wrote both stories in different chapters but bye the end they had intwinded to each other. i had never cried over a book untill the power of one and tandia. i cried firslty when peekay had realised that doc had died in the crystal cave and then in tandia when peekay himself crawled into the cave to die with his old friend doc.

Me too, I cried so much when Peekay died, why why why. But I guess thats why its such a good book because it shows the realism of the characters situation, and anywy there is part of Peekay left, and that is 'Lumukanda'

i read both 'the power of one, and tandia' and i think these two were the best books i have ever read. my sister and i had a fight, because we both wanted to read tandia at the same time.
the story looked so real and convincing that i cried. though it would have been even better if a story about 'the child of the morning star' was written.

I've read the Potato Factory, Solomons Song(i know I missed one in the middle but it truly didn't matter I still loved the story), Four Fires and have just finished Jessica.I can't believe these people who claim to have read Jessica and still ask "who was Joeys father?" Someone said that a movie or mini series had been made about it. Does anyone know any details ie, who's in it, when will it be released etc. Love your work mr Courtenay keep up the excellent work

Is there ANY chance at ALL that BC could possibly write a sequel to Tandia? I hate it when such a fantastic book is finished and it's heartwrenching and you know there's no "debrief", no chance of finding out what happens now.

I just finished the Power of One/Tania combination and was blown away. Never have I read anything as gripping and inspiring as this. I too now hold my head high and know that anything is possible if you want it bad enough. 'First with the head, then with the heart' will live with me forever. I laughed and cryed the whole way through as though feeling every punch and savoring every victory for myself.
Wouldn't Lumukanda be an excelent book.
Peekay did not actually make it into the cave did he? He went to the dreamtime there on the ledge?

I finished Tandia this morning, and had read Power of one barely a few weeks ago. Like everyone here, I was simply sucked into the books and could hardly stop thinking about them when I had to go to work.
First, to get one detail out of the way... In the book, I did not find it clearly specified whether or not peekay was able to crawl back into the cristal cave. BC doesn't always go into such details. But I think it "fits" that peekay actually makes it to the cave, so let's say he does!
Tandia's ending was very tough on me. It was extremely hard to accept that peekay had to die, considering he is probably my favorite character in any book I've ever read and the one I grew most attached to.
The thing that touched me the most in peekay's last few thoughts were: "Who will love me now? Hymie, oh beautiful hymie." I think the peekay-hymie friendship was one of the strongest aspects of both books, and to me the thought that these two would never again see each other caused its fair share of tears. I also was very touched by peekay's gratefulness for the life he led right before dying.
My thoughts are still somewhat of a mess! I enjoyed both of these books enourmously.
One of the things I would have liked to see more though, was peekay's relationship with his coaches, both Sonny Goldman and Dutch (that PRICK!). It sometimes felt as if BC wanted to catch up with the lack of development in this area and all of a sudden would write a short paragraph on how goldman or dutch had been a tremendous influence in peekay's last few years. BUT, I reckon that developing the relationship with hymie was way more important, and that maybe there wasn't any room left to develop his relationship with his coaches without interfering with hymie's friendship. It also might have delved to deep into boxing, and the book is not really about boxing anyway.
One of the many things I love about BC's writing: his metaphors! God!!! They're not fancy or anything (I hate fancy writing), but they are so right on the spot!! I could quote a few ones here but best keep this short.

The first book i've red of bryce was jessica. It was amazing when you read the book that bryce could capture your emotions and it feels like you are the character.
I loves jessica, after reading i presueded to read another.
Unfortunately i had just finish reading Tandia before reading 'The power of one' and realised tandia came after.
Anyway i feel in love with book, it moved me to a point to that i couldn't stop reading. It only took me 1 and a quarter day. Really i stayed up 24 hrs without sleep. I had to attent my university studies and only had about 50 pages left, the whole day i could not thinking about it, and i still can't up to this point because of the shock that Peekay had died. I kept thinking maybe i read it wrong and so i would read it over and over again, crying cos it was a book i had never come across and touched me deeply.
I still can't come to the fact that peekay is gone and leaving tandia alone without him, thinking about it now makes my heart sink. As coming to the end of Tandia, i never wanted to end i just wished it went for hundreds of more pages.
I really do hope that bryce does write a 3rd trilogy, bout Lumukanda
I've only read two of his books, jessica and Tandia. I find both the endings are sad but satificing.

OH MY GOD!!! I just finished Tandia - WOW. I have never cried before at the end of a book, and I enjoyed seeing similar comments from some of you!
Soaps - you MUST read The Power of One, and then read Tandia again!
I just looked again and Peekay doesn't quite make it into the cave - he makes it to the ledge. It says how he can see the mountains of Swaziland and the sunset, then he wakes up from passing out.
Just when I stop crying, I read the last page and start up again! I can't believe there isn't a sequel! Lumukanda, I'm sure, would make an incredible story.
What a powerful pair of books. I will encourage EVERYONE I know to read these books. I am considering Jessica, or another of his books, but everyone seems to be saying that Power of One and Tandia are the best. We'll see.
It's strange, as I got through about 2/3rds of the way through Tandia, I knew (in my head, but my heart wouldn't accept it!) that Peekay would not be alive at the end. I don't know why, just a feeling I had.
I will wait eagerly for Lukumanda's story.

yeah i've read 'The Power of One' and wow!! It is such a great book, i never knew from reading Tandia first how many obstacles Peekay had to go through, so emotional.
And yeah im reading Tandia again , i just so hooked on these two books.
I would definity say that these two books of bryce are the best!!!!!
Everyone go and grab yourself a copy, you wouldn't want to put it down

I'm back! I just read Jessica, and I have to say, I enjoyed it, but there is NO way it's better than Power of One and Tandia. I was surprised by the ending. And how could you not know who the father of Jessica's baby is?
I found I had a terrible time getting into it - with it being in present tense. I found it irritating at first, but then I got used to it and couldn't put it down!
Has anyone seen the Power of One movie? My husband saw it a long time ago and said it was okay, nothing compared to the book. It only covers a couple of chapters.
Someone very wise told me recently that there could never be a sequel to Tandia, Lukumanda's story. This is why. There's still apartheid in Africa. How much could we read when there's little change in the situation? It's not like BC can create a character that just happens to get rid, magically, of apartheid 30 - 40 years ago, even though it still exists today. Where could he go with it?
At any rate, I really enjoy these stories. We're trying hard to find hard cover copies of Tandia and Power of One. Seems they don't exist anymore, only paperback.
Sigh...I miss Peekay!!!

I also read "A Little Night Country" - very nice! A nice introduction to the ideas in Power of One. A good taste test, if you will, to give someone you're not sure will like a whole book. Short, but very powerful.
