Discussion: Arthur C Clarke

Some of his ideas are good, but I don't like some of the situations he puts his characters into. His science is very good for a science fiction authro

WTF IS WITH 3001, it completely ruined the series, was in consistient, with the other books and had a crap ending. anyone else agree?

I'm 52, can't even remember specific details of stories I've read, but know how much his writing has coloured my brain. Can any young person name a writer who is as predictive as Arthur C Clarke has been?

How do you introduce a new author to discuss? OLIVIA BUTLER Rules!

I loved Childhood's End, A Fall Of Moondust and ofcourse 2001: A Space Odyssee.
Some stories, like Childhood's End have a mystical "feel" to it, but most stories are kind of practical.
I liked that in Moondust.
It's just as if the future's here already, and it's the kind of story you could hear about on CNN.

Yes, AC Clarke is a real visionary.
Things he wrote about and imagined came true, in his lifetime.
I heard that the concept of a communication's satelite is his.

3001 I haven't read. Pity if it's not that good.
Well, AC Clarke must be about a hundred years old now.
It's amazing he still writes!

Clarke is quite elderly now (I think he's around 87 or so). A friend of mine visited him recently at Clarke's home in Sri Lanka. Clarke was gracious enough to meet my friend and answer some questions, but he was clearly in failing health. Clarke said that he must sleep at least 15 hours per day!

I love many of his novels, but as with any author, there are some books that we love much more than others. My favorites are Childhood's End, the Rama series, The Fountains of Paradise, and most of all, his first book and still the one that deals with the most distant future Clarke has imagined (one billion years in the future), The City and the Stars.

The City of that book is Diaspar, which is still in my mind the ideal urban setting. It's only shortcoming is that it sealed itself off from the outside. Until...but you'll have to read the book to find out!
