Discussion: Arno Schmidt

His writing is hilarious, yet serious. The Egghead Republic is the best!

I read "Evening Etched in Gold" a few years back....and had a huge edition of "Zettel's Traum" also.....I was able to "pick up" on various Poe and Joyce citations which are scattered throughout.....and the book's dense allusiveness and elusivity [playing] were attractive. Schmidt does [did?] seem to have a wonderfully absurd Rabelaisian humor....freewheeling....I suppose radically angry at the Establishment as he saw it.....I should round up some more titles of his I suppose and see what I might make of them. I wonder if portions of "Zettel's Traum" have been translated into English by now....just curious
